School to Prison
Pipeline
Tajah Strickland
Cycle 1 Kansas City
What is School to Prison Pipeline ?
The School-to-Prison Pipeline
refers to the trend where
students, particularly from
marginalized communities, are
disproportionately pushed out
of schools and into the criminal
justice system.
What’s the Trend
How Bad is the Issue
Young adolescents who attend schools
with high suspension rates are
substantially more likely to be arrested
and jailed as adults. These long-term,
negative impacts in adulthood apply
across a school's population, not just
to students who are suspended during
their school years.
Statistic Examples
Students assigned a school that is one
standard deviation stricter are 17
percent more likely to be arrested and
20 percent more likely to go to jail,
based on our estimated increases of
about 3.2 percentage points for arrests
and 2.5 percentage points for
incarcerations.
What’s the Trend
Biggest cause of school to
prison pipeline
Zero-tolerance policies
Excessive use of disciplinary
measures
School resource officers (SROs)
Inadequate support services
Data Tables
What happens if it’s
not addressed

 Juvenile court and detention
 Decrease in the access to education

My Civic Solution
• .Raise awareness on how severe the issue is .
• Do more community service work to help better the
results coming from the issue.
• Create a safe haven with a tailored curriculum,
emphasizing life skills, and fostering a positive
atmosphere. Aim to redirect expelled students
towards constructive paths and empower them for
future success.
Thank You !
