3. 1.For which cycle lengths will it
be at least 100 years before the cicadas are attacked by all
three predators again? What do you notice about these
numbers?
For cycle 17 the cicadas will be attacked in 2120. For cycle 11
cicadas will be attacked in 2134.And in cycle 13 cicadas will be
attacked in 2156. All these numbers are when the cicadas will be
attacked by all three predators, over 100 years.
What we noticed about all these numbers is that they are all
prime numbers.
2.Explain why you think this happens. Hint: In the table you
completed in 1, look at what happens when the cycle length
has lots of divisors,
like 12 years. Why do you think the cicadas get attacked so
often in this case?
I think this happens because it’s a prime number so it has lots of
different divisors- 1,2,3,4,6,12- and this way it gives more chances
to be attacked because there is more number while for example
13 only has 2 divisors- 1, 13- so it gets attacked fewer times.
