September 2016
Dave and I are so proud of what we have achieved
with all of your help and support.
CI results to-date £1,026,000 has been saved on CI
projects and CI improvements, we are smashing it as
One Team.
The success we are having through sustaining our
processes, all of us helping to drive the business
forward and continuing on our CI journey - just
imagine what we can achieve in 2016-17.
Sandra McCabe
Several meetings and many sketches and designs later, we were
starting to see the site evolve. With our ideas in hand we had our
trip to the web designers:Flair who made it all seem real.
Once we saw the finished result we were so excited that we’d
taken it to this stage. With all our ideas combined, we were
looking forward to unveiling the final web page with Neil, Sam
and Dave, who had been on the journey with us, sitting in the
feedback sessions. Sam, Neil and Dave’s reaction it was
amazing - the team had ‘exceeded their expectations’ - we did
it!
Now we’re looking forward to offering our customers
another great service. One which is not offered by our
competitors!
Shirley wants to say: I have to thank the team because without
them we wouldn’t have made it. To Nick Woodward for being our
very own ‘gizmo guru’, to Sandra for keeping us on track (and
keeping us fed with cakes) and particularly to Gareth without his
brilliant skills and knowledge I don’t know how we would have
done it. Finally, collectively to the whole team for the fun we had
along the way. Thanks guys.
Gareth wants to say: I really enjoyed the great team work and
the great team spirit, thank you all. Howard for educating me on
all the parts that make the tooling up which I had uploaded onto
the site and to Louise on reception for helping me weigh all the
items and test that the postage matched and thirdly Phil for help-
ing me identify all the tooling. You have all helped me improve
my knowledge of products.
CI comment: As the leader of this project, the team need to
remember the focus and drive shown throughout the project, we
all had tasks and completed those tasks on time. This project
means so much to me because it shows how far we have come
doing project work at PA, team members driving themselves to
achieve goals, exceeding those goals and then wanting to be
involved in more projects to change the business.

Spares Web Page
When we first embarked on the spares website project, we thought
‘this should be quite straight forward - how wrong we were!
Our first get together was quite a lively event as we all seemed to
want to throw our ideas into the pot and with so many creative
people in the room we all had lots of different opinions.
As a team, we took a step back and prioritised what we believed
our customers would want to see.

Deon Fabs -
Mezzanine James
Deon and James have been tasked to clear areas to enable
teams to move so that we have space for the two new
machines coming in by the end of 2016 with Neil Ashton’s
‘increase capacity’ project.
This was a job that needed doing over 12 months ago - I
took it to the first level only to see it return to a mess of
mixed up tooling. This time I was determined to see it
through to the end, if at first you don't succeed, try a
different approach. Thanks to Dan Robinson for identifying
all the tooling.
Deon Wilson
Since starting the clean-up process on the mezzanine we
have recycled a number of components with a company
called Radwell. So far we have generated £2212.20 and
the majority of this has come from used or even broken
components or parts that have been kept for over 10
years.
Since then, and with a great deal of help from Deon, we
have filled a further two euro pallet bins of what can only
be described as …. Stuff! These bins have been collected
and we are currently waiting for the valuation.
When sorting through all the parts, we came across a
previously used product pump. As a result, we contacted a
couple of customers that used this type of pump and by
co-incidence one of them needed a new pump and
keerrching another £2000!
Then along comes a company that need a couple of
screens for a piece of non-PA kit, it just so happens that
Steptoe’s yard had two spare and this resulted in another
sale for a further £1000.
So far over £5000 has been generated and we are still
going! So it just goes to show you can turn crap into cash!
Let’s not forget the extra money we will also make
sending the scrap to ACM.
James Bridge
For those of you that don’t know, on Friday 23rd September
2016 a team from Packaging Automation Ltd visited the David
Lewis Centre in Alderley Edge to carry out volunteering work.
The David Lewis Centre is our chosen charity which supports
those with complex needs including learning disabilities,
epilepsy and autism.
In the morning we were given a tour of the facilities which can
only be described as ‘amazing’ with a sports hall, swimming
pool, college, school and its own working farm, which is where
we spent most of our day (not feeding the animals – Sandra!!!)
Andy Wardell who previously worked as a landscape gardener
got straight in to digging holes and put the estate gardeners to
shame with the speed and accuracy of his spade work. The
environment was so peaceful, calm and relaxing for the
residents of the David Lewis Centre and it needed the utmost
control of Chris Taylor not to swear throughout the day! Most
of the day consisted of creosoting around the whole of the
farm. It appeared that anything that was made of wood got
covered in paint; however, Sandra struggled to differentiate
between a piece of wood and a living Emu….I await the
insurance claim from the David Lewis Centre!
Ryan, who had never used a paint brush in his life
experienced new skills as there seemed to be more creosote
on the floor than there was on the fence!
Tanya Westenraad managed to control the enthusiasm of the
PA volunteers and not helped by me as I took nearly 4 hours
to paint a farm gate….but what can I say, I am a perfectionist!
At the close of the day, we still had 16 fences to complete or
was that 13 Sandra? The team were not willing to leave the
job half-finished and remained until the work was complete. In
all seriousness, it was incredible the work which had been
done throughout the day by all the volunteers, showing a work
ethic which any company would be proud of. Darren from the
David Lewis Centre couldn’t believe the amount of work which
had been done and that there was not one person who wanted
to leave until the work had been completed.
Can I suggest that if you want to feel incredibly proud for doing
something great and of adding real value, then please get in
touch with the Staff Council and get your name on the list. I
cannot speak highly enough for the opportunity and the reward
that it has brought.
Well done Team!
Neil Ashton

ABP Visit
After our ‘magical mystery’ ride
travelling to ABP, my first
impression when we arrived was
‘wow, this is a huge site and what
a fabulous location’.
We were welcomed by Ad and a much needed cup of tea!
Ad Mazi, our guide for the day gave the business
overview brief on what they do at the Ellesmere site and
where they are up to on their own CI journey.
There is a high standard throughout the business, ABP
should be so proud of their re-build programme and with
their CI work helping those achieving improvements. ABP
are progressing towards many great improvements
within their business and we wish them well and
please give PA a shout if you want any more support.
Information about ABP
At ABP Food Group, animal welfare is a cornerstone of
our business – so we’ve invested heavily in ensuring
that our customers can be 100% secure in the integrity
of our processes.
Farm Assurance- ABP Food Group source farm-assured
cattle from throughout the UK and Ireland, which is
accredited to EN45011 and independently audited and
certified.
Ad informed us that as a Company, they are very
conscious of their carbon footprint, so to hear they even
use the fat as a fuel source just shows how sustainable
they are.
PA offered knowledge on our journey and time frames for
our own projects, our ups and downs within project work
and mentioned never forget to celebrate the successes,
no matter how large or small. We explained the need for
the project teams to stay focused to bring projects to the
end when the scope of the project has been achieved. .
Shirley commented: I appreciate how well we run our
projects with short time frames and how satisfying
the end result, and the pride you feel changing the
business. It was a long day, but very rewarding and
enlightening to see yet again, how all of us here at PA are
constantly striding forward.
A big thank you to ABP for letting us come and see their
great facility and for giving their time for the ladies to see
other production processes.
Thanks to Sandra and Lucy for the laughs on the way
home and a big thanks to our chauffeur for the day –
Lucy!

Star of the month - Emilie Hale
The first day I met Emilie - what a breath of fresh air! We met
on the July bake off day, and without hesitation she started to
get involved. I knew then she would fit in as we continue our
journey at PA and never loses her energized manner no matter
what you need help with.
We are all working towards being team players but its great to
have a new person from day one displaying the behaviours we
want and offering ideas and suggestions. Her next challenge is
the spares new web page.

Systems Team building game
The task is to build a spaghetti tower with not many
materials and within a set time. This first game went
really well, “it’s only a game” some say but no, the
objective of the 30 minute session is to improve
communications between personnel, build a bond
through team working, build our planning skills and let’s
not forget eat the odd marshmallow and have a bit of
fun.
How did the team do, height
96.52 cm, built in 21.20 minutes. Great team work,
great design. Even with all the teams’ effort working
together when it came to free standing section i.e.
blowing the top part of the tower back up , all 3 team
members doing this, to make the tower even higher,
they are 3rd..

not standing for 60 secs
What team will be next to take the challenge? We
are running 1 session per month (see list below)
