SettingGoals
My long term career goal is to graduate with my Bachelor’s in Science in University
Studies to help teach the community about animals. I would like to be able to, one day, work
together with mainly teaching children about animals and their environment. As there is no
certification, nor degree plan that quite fits my needs, I have chosen the Bachelors of Science in
University Studies through Texas Tech. This is not a one size fits all degree program and I
believe that choosing the leadership classes and communications classes will help prepare me for
what I would like to do with my career goal. Graduating from Texas Tech is achievable, and if I
decide to change degree plans or move on to more different things to study about, I will not be at
a loss. I will only have bettered myself with a higher education. No matter what, this will be a
win, win for myself, because I am doing what is right for me. For the first initial portion of my
goal, I must complete the four year degree plan through Texas Tech. In order to achieve my goal,
I must utilize the proper resources for my main goal with working with children and animals. I
began with contacting the Texas Tech University studies program and will continue to research
to see who the proper contacts are for my lifetime career goals. I must be willing to concentrate
on each class, and keep my main focus on graduation to help better myself. Graduating from
Texas Tech is a lifelong dream, and I believe that if I work hard and dedicate my time, achieving
this goal is possible. This whole idea of graduating with a college degree is beyond anything that
I have ever done for myself and it is important for me to be happy.
In order for myself to achieve the goal of earning my Bachelors in Science in University
Studies, in order to work with educating children about animals, I must take the following steps
to help me achieve my goal. The first initial step is to further research how I can further help
educate children about animals. I must learn the proper techniques, as well as, what, if any, more
educational requirements are needed in order to work with children. The same goes towards

what, if any, more educational requirements are needed for working with animals. The second
major step that I must take in order to achieve my goal is to insure all education requirements are
fulfilled. I must concentrate on all required assignments and work week by week to insure
everything is in line for my requirements from Texas Tech. My degree will come through Texas
Tech but I must insure that I work hard to earn my degree. This will not be handed to me and I
must keep my focus on working hard to achieve my goal. The third step that I must take in order
to achieve my long-term goal, is to research possible career opportunities. I am concentrating on
the idea of working with both animals and children, but need to focus on how to turn this into a
career. Once the requirements are fulfilled I must be able to prepare myself on how I am going to
utilize my degree. I must research the possibilities of fulfilling this goal and how I will be able to
work with children and animals combined. Researching is a vital process, without doing this I
will be concentrating on the “now” and not focusing on the long-term career goal. I do not want
to be wrapped up in today’s assignment and not focus on the career in the end.
My three main areas of concentration are, Agricultural Leadership, Organizational
Leadership, and Communication Studies. In Agricultural Leadership, this course will help further
educate myself on what a leader should and should not do. Leadership will be a vital portion of
educating the community about animals and how to lead them when handling the animals
themselves. Without being a leader, I would have the chance for someone, or the animal itself, to
get hurt while handling the animals. This would lead to lawsuits and potentially shutting down
the business as a whole. In leadership there has to be structure, and without structure, disaster is
inevitable. As for organizational leadership, this course will help me better understand the proper
way to guide myself for the career that I have chosen. In organizational leadership courses, I will
have the chance to prioritize what is important for myself. This is a lifelong lesson that I will

benefit greatly from. This will help me teach not only for my career goal, but for life itself on
how to become better organized. For communication studies, this course is vital when it comes
to educating the public. Communication studies will help me truly understand how to properly
communicate with all types of people, as well as, educate me on what it takes to speak to the
general public. I will be working daily with people of all walks of life, but if I do not have proper
communication skills that I can learn through this course, then the people that I would possibly
reach out to may become confused and never want to learn about anything like this again. With
my main goal of being to educate the general public about animals, confusion is the last thing I
need to happen. Great communication skills are a must in the industry.
