This document discusses how adopting circular economic principles and business models in low and middle-income countries can create jobs, boost economic growth, and improve environmental and health outcomes. Case studies from countries like Brazil, Ghana, India, and Kenya demonstrate the benefits. Transitioning to a circular economy provides a "triple win" by increasing productivity and growth, improving employment quality and quantity, and reducing pollution-related diseases that claim millions of lives annually. - Case studies show that public bodies like councils and housing associations have delivered both cost savings and local economic benefits through procurement practices that support local suppliers and jobs.
- The report aims to make the economic case for more strategically using public procurement to achieve multiple goals like poverty reduction, social inclusion, and savings, not just cost

For nearly nine decades, the Charles Stewart Mott Foundation has been guided by our founder’s strongly held belief that every person exists in a kind of informal partnership with his or her community. Our latest annual report explores the power of such intimate collaboration, illustrated by four inspiring “portraits” of people who, with the help of Mott grantmaking, have engaged with their communities to create positive change.
The report also features a joint message from William S. White, the Foundation’s chairman and CEO, and Mott President Ridgway H. White, who reflect on the value of partnership and the understanding that “no single institution has the knowledge, resources or agility to single-handedly address complex social issues. That power must lay in the collective hands, hearts and minds of people working together, often in new and creative ways, to make good things happen.”
The document discusses the 17 new Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) adopted by the UN in 2015 to make the world more prosperous, inclusive, sustainable and resilient. It provides an overview of each of the 17 goals and their focus areas. The SDGs are a universal plan to tackle issues like poverty, hunger, health, education, climate change, and more. Businesses are called on to apply their creativity and innovation to help achieve the SDGs through approaches like sustainable business practices and multi-stakeholder partnerships.

Initiatives include recycling programs on most campuses, energy tracking systems, and dedicated sustainability staff. Challenges remain around financing sustainability investments and a lack of resources. However, HBCUs are tapping their cultural DNA to develop innovative strategies, such as converting football fields to organic farms. Programs in environmental studies, urban planning and toxicology are training students to address global challenges through remarkable skill and ingenuity.

Introduction to Green Center Acres
Green Center Acres is “Economics 101”---Back to the Basics---JOBS
Green Center Acres literally addresses a huge percentage of our day to day challenges
while not only developing a sustainable community but at the same time implementing
outreach programs while stimulating economic growth in a direct way. We can find a new
path to sustainable growth, the growth of new Green Economy and of sustainable
lifestyles, manufacturing, and economic prosperity. We start with the premise that we
need to ensure both adequate environmental protection and a strong economy.
We estimate that there will be a need to employ hundreds of people just to maintain these locations
with all the elements mentioned. This number is besides the need of educators, Agri-tourism
support, distribution, transportation, and the ripple effect to third parties. Work offerings will be
geared first to “People of Need”, which will include but will not be limited to Senior Citizens,
Veterans, the Disabled, and the Homeless.
Green Center Acres “Creates Revenue Centers” from Basic Human Needs
Education, health care, and equal opportunity are essential to a productive workforce; as
are safe products and working conditions. Efficient utilization of land, water, energy, and
other natural resources makes business more productive. Ultimately, a healthy society
creates expanding demand for business, as more human needs are met and aspirations
grow. A strong commitment must be part of a sustainable growth strategy for businesses
to be successful, for people and future generations to prosper, and for natural resources
to be replenished.
Green Center Acres “Mission Statement”
Our mission is threefold:
1. To help preserve and support long and proud farming heritage and traditions while
demonstrating successful alternative farm management strategies and 21st
century business models that integrate a portfolio of traditional farming practices,
green technology, recreational enterprises, programs targeting the youth and
elderly, and a host of other innovative business activities which will assist in helping
revitalize local business
2. To restore farms to a national prominence and as a model for how business, civic,
education, and government synergy can make profound differences in the lives of
ordinary citizens
3. Job Creation - Work offerings will be geared first to “People of Need”, which will
include but will not be limited to Senior Citizens, Veterans, the Disabled, and the
Homeless.
We have put together a multi-disciplinary project team with vast experience in the areas
that are aligned with our mission, vision, and values.

Green Center Acres seeks a “Second Look”
Green Center Acres seeks a second bottom line look to measure its performance in terms of
positive social impact. We are incorporating a "cause marketing" strategy as a means of
differentiating ourselves from the competition. Social media is allowing "company helping a
cause" promotions to expand rapidly as people who support the cause easily "share" the
information with their friends who care about making the world a better place.
Since the majority of the production will be soil-free and pesticide free we would be able to supply
the Kosher, Asian, Gourmet, Organic and mainstream communities.
We already have the support from numerous Colleges and Universities to help in the
implementation of many educational and agricultural programs.
Strong Leadership, Core Team & Extended Team
Because the program is set up over a long period we must be viewed as excellent long term
partners. We are seasoned professionals and have the credentials to back it up. Our track
record and experience are important aspects to a successful final outcome.
Project Description
Green Center Acres will conduct itself in structure as a combination of a Campus and a Working
Farm. Individual businesses will be created (both non-for profit and for profit). All businesses must
compliment the overall theme and mission of the Center.
The Center will incorporate four distinct yet inter-related strategic business segments under a
single umbrella. These include agriculture, education, renewable energy and tourism. A common
hallmark for each individual business unit is its state of the arts facility, which incorporates twenty-
first century technology and old-world charm, elegance, and attention to service to meet the
demanding, and discriminating imperatives. The Center is destined to be the “Model” for what the
future will be.
These entities will include but are not limited to Hydroponics, Aquaponics, and Fish Farming.
Requirements for all of these entities would be;
must donate a percentage of all food production to community food programs
must have the facilities open for both educational programs and agro-tourism in general
must employ and train the in-need population whenever possible (people with physical
and mental disabilities, veterans, homeless, unemployed etc.)
Living Green Exhibits ...learn, train, educate
The Center will have working Energy Exhibits to demonstrate all aspects of Green Living. All
facilities and structures will have as many renewable energy and energy savings features as
possible. These facilities will be open for educational programs. The Center will also approach
corporate sponsors to help finance and install the latest technology. In exchange the Center will
also allow the corporations to promote career opportunities and training using these facilities.

Community Outreach and Give Back Programs
Ranch Outreach Programs
Adolescent Ranch Programs
Adolescent and Youth Programs specialize in helping troubled and defiant teens to
overcome their behavioral and emotional problems. These programs help young people to
identify and work through internal conflicts and emotional obstacles that have kept them
from responding to parental efforts, schools, and treatment. We will accept boys and girls
ages 14 to 17 and offers a 28-day minimum program. These are children who are inherently
good and have the ability to be successful, but because of unhealthy misperceptions about
themselves, they have limited access to their own abilities and strengths.
EAGALA Model Equine Assisted Psychotherapy (EAP) program. EAGALA (Equine
Assisted Growth and Learning Assoc.) is present in all 50 states and over 40
countries worldwide, it is an un-mounted modality that utilizes horses to help people
overcome emotional, behavioral and mental health issues, paying tribute to Churchill
when he said - "there is something about the outside of a horse that is extremely
valuable for the inside of a man".
EAP and EAL services with a profit in mind. Individuals, Couples, Families and
Groups for therapy. Working also in the EAL (Life skills learning) model to help
organizations and corporate companies learn better leadership and team building
skills.
Animal Rescue & Adoption Programs
Both Thoroughbreds and Standardbreds can be successful show or pleasure
mounts beyond the track. With proper training there are no limits to what these
horses can do. Many have excelled in hunter/jumpers, dressage, eventing,
competitive trail riding, fox-hunting, 4H, barrel racing, carriage driving,
pleasure riding, and as broodmares. These highly athletic and intelligent
horses have a lot to offer individuals that take the time to teach them

Farm Outreach Programs
Urban agriculture programs hold immense potential to be a vital part of
a growing movement to bring fresh, nutritious, local food to urban
residents. With our farm project, we hope to expand on its mission of
feeding the hungry.
Music, Photography & Arts Centers
The Arts Center is committed to changing lives through art
and serving the community. While there will be a variety of
public programs that take place onsite, the Ranch makes an
effort to extend its reach beyond the borders campuses.
The purpose of the Ranch outreach program is to serve the
local geographic community of artists and non-artists
through accessible, sustained programming and area
partnerships structured to meet the needs using the visual arts.

Farming – State of the Art
Hydroponics
With hydroponic technology and a controlled environment
greenhouse, you have the ability to grow premium quality
produce using a minimum of space, water and fertilizer.
Hydroponics is an intensive form of agriculture that can fulfill
the consumers demand for premium produce and provide the
grower with a profitable business. Hydroponics literally means
“water working” but, in practical use, it means growing plants
in a nutrient solution without soil. The most popular hydroponic

crop in the US is tomatoes, with second fancy lettuce and leaf crops, third cucumbers and fourth
herbs, peppers and flowers.
Commercially, Hydroponics, Aquaculture and
Aquaponics can all be used to produce large quantities
of food in an environmentally friendly way.
Aquaculture (fish farming), is a great way to help supply
the growing demand for fresh fish without depleting
natural resources. There are many types of aquaculture
and many different species cultured.
Aeroponics
Aeroponics is the method of growing where the plant roots are constantly misted with a nutrient
solution.
Aquaponics
In hydroponics, you mix a specific nutrient formula in solution which is fed to the plants. In
Aquaponics, you combine aquaculture (fish farming) with hydroponic production. The nutrient-rich
waste water from the fish tanks is pumped through plant grow beds.
Fish Farming
AQUACULTURE (farming of fish under controlled conditions) is a growth industry striving to
satisfy a growing market for food fish. It currently is one of the fastest growing sectors of
agriculture in the United States. Growing public demand for a healthy tasty and affordable food is
stimulating the "boom" in this industry. The decline in wild fish populations as a result of
overharvest and water pollution has promoted the culture of farm-fresh that are grown in
contaminant-free waters in indoor tank systems.
Mushroom Farming
The market for mushrooms continues to grow due to interest in
their culinary, nutritional, and health benefits. They also show
potential for use in waste management.

ChiNini’s Nature’s Wonderland – The World of Insects
Insect reproduction is necessary for insectariums, pet stores, fishing businesses, and the main
research facility and there is a high demand in Sault Ste. Marie because of the presence of an
internationally recognized federal facility and the lack of commercial insect production in Northern
Ontario. It is expected that many schools would take advantage of bug tours, insect anatomy and
reproduction. Support would be coming from organizations such as Destination North, Fluttergo
and Great Lakes Forestry Centre.
The Great Creation Tour
Insect Farming
In summary the practice of raising insects for agricultural purposes. It can either be used to fight
invasive species, to create industrial products such as petroleum or to grow inexpensive and
environmentally sustainable food for humans or animals.
Overview
Insects offer a highly economical, sustainable solution to existing and looming issues with the
production and distribution of high quality protein to help meet growing demands as the world
population grows and increases its protein consumption. Insects have a high nutritional value,
probiotic potential, and affordable price. Insects such as crickets and worms have high
concentrations of amino acids, vitamin B12, riboflavin, vitamin A, etc. They are a good substitute
for protein. Insect farming is much cheaper than cattle farming and requires much less energy.
Cattle feedlots require a huge amount of energy and money to raise and feed cattle, remove
waste and to keep them healthy. Insects are grown in their naturally based places, in a normal
and healthy ecosystem. Organic waste from plant harvest and processing feeds large populations
of worms. Worms turn the waste stream into high quality fertilizer that can nourish the next
generation of plants growing. Insects and other crops can support each other and provide a
surplus of each other to farmers.
Benefits
Reduced feed
Typical cattle requires roughly 8 pounds of feed to produce a single pound of beef. Insects on the
other hand require only 2 pounds of feed to produce 1 pound of meat, making them four times as
efficient. Much of this efficiency comes about because bugs get their heat from the environment
instead of having to create their own body heat like typical mammals.
Nutrient efficiency
Many bugs are more efficient in the amount of nutrients they contain compared to other unhealthy
substances and calories. Locusts for example contain between 8 and 20 milligrams of iron for
every 100 grams of locusts. Beef on the other hand contains roughly 6 milligrams of iron in the
same amount of meat. Crickets as well are very efficient when you compare nutrients. For every
100 grams of substance crickets contain 12.9 grams of protein, 121 calories, and 5.5 grams of
fat. Beef contains more protein containing 23.5 grams in 100 grams of substance, but also has
roughly 3 times the calories, and four times the amount of fat as crickets do in 100 grams.
12. DEVELOPER RESOURCE GROUP / GREEN CENTER ACRES
“CHININI ECO RETREAT” CANADA Feb. 25, 2015
Page 12 of 28
Greenhouse emissions
The raising of typical livestock causes almost 20% of all the greenhouse gases created.
Alternative sources of protein in the average diet such as insects lowers the amount of livestock
needed and can help lower greenhouse gases created in the process.
Land usage
Many animal farms contain pastures to allow livestock to graze. According to onegreenplanet.org
raising animals for food uses up to 30% of the Earth’s land mass. On top of this almost 80% of
ammonia that the U.S. produces comes from animal excrement. Using insects as part of the diet
could replace some of the required space currently used for livestock. And given the size of
insects and how fast they reproduce much less land is required to produce meat.
Farming of popular insects
Crickets
Among the different types of crickets, the house cricket is the most common type to be used for
human consumption. House crickets only live up to about eight weeks. Until they are twenty days
old they are fed high protein animal feed, most commonly chicken feed that contains either 14%
or 20% of protein. Once they finally reach twenty days old they can be fed a mixture of the two. A
few days before harvesting the crickets at forty-five days old the crickets are fed various
vegetables such as pumpkins, cassava leaves, morning glory leaves, and more. This is done to
improve the taste of the insects and reduce the use of the expensive, high protein animal feed.
People have eaten insects in Africa, Asia, and Latin America for centuries. However, insect
consumption by humans is decreasing in many places. Thailand, on the other hand is increasing
its insect consumption. There are more than 20,000 insect farming operations in Thailand alone.
Most of them are household or small-scale businesses, though entomologists at Khon Kaen
University began an insect farming project 15 years ago to help prevent the endangerment of
edible insect species. The business has turned into a multi-million dollar market providing food
for millions of consumers as well as employment and pay for thousands of Thai people. Being
that over 2 billion people worldwide consume insects today in around 112 nations in located
primarily in Africa, Latin America, Australia, Asia, and the Pacific, Thailand isn't the only country
in which bug farming occurs. Though locust farming in Laos is in decline, fly farming is becoming
a trend in South Africa. Europe is another region that has just begun to discover bug farming.
However, very few countries have regulations on insect eating. For example, in Spain, if you have
insects, you can consume them, but you can’t buy or sell them.
Methods
Breeding insects share similarities and differences with the breeding of larger animals. Due to the
high amount of insect species, breeding technics are mostly insect-specific. Difficulties are also
specific. This means that the solution for a breeding problem with meal worms for example will
most probably be ineffective for a similar problem with a cricket breeding. Furthermore, the
technical requisites of the breeding have to be made compatible with the awaited economical
profit. Insect breeding requires therefore two kinds of skills: 1. mastering rearing techniques 2.
mastering analytical methods for choosing the rearing techniques which are best adapted to the
economic conditions

Worm Farming
Earthworms are now recognized as highly effective natural agents for soil improvement and are
especially helpful in loosening and aerating the ground. The little creatures initially perforate the
top layers of earth and then gradually penetrate into the subsoil, where their burrows open
passages for plant root growth. The worms also eat soil and organic debris and the resulting
droppings or "castings" are a valuable fertilizer in finely granulated form.
Learn, Train and Education Facility
Agri-Tourism
Agri-tourism has become extremely popular throughout the United States
in recent years and hydroponics, Aquaponics and controlled environment
agriculture are part of this growing trend. Visitors will see the latest in
agricultural systems of today and what agriculture might look like in the
future, both for earth as well as in outer space! An Agri-tourism
greenhouse can best be described as a state-of-the-art showcase of
modern technology in agriculture as well as a tourist attraction / retail
indoor gardening center. Visitors will learn about controlled environment
agriculture, hydroponics, organics and Aquaponics while touring the lush
greenhouses.
