Chinese characters are used in writing Chinese, Japanese, Korean and formerly Vietnamese. They are subdivided into traditional Chinese characters, which are used officially in Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macau in their modern shapes since the 5th century, and simplified characters, which were developed in 1950 based on phonetic simplifications to decrease strokes and simplify writing and were approved for teaching schoolchildren and foreigners in 1958.
