3. The Purpose of a Job Interview
From the employer’s perspective, the purpose of a job interview is to see if the
candidate is a good fit for the position.
Employers generally do not hire solely on the basis of a resume. They want to talk
with job applicants to determine if they are qualified for the position and if they are
a good fit for the company.
Every applicant is competing with other applicants who want the same job. The
interview process allows an employer to compare applicants and decide which
person to hire.
4. From the applicant’s perspective, the purpose of a job interview is to see if you
want to work for the company and, if so, to get a job.
During the interview process, you may be interviewed by several persons. How you
present yourself is crucial as with resumes, first impressions count.
An interviewer often makes a decision whether to hire or not during the first 15
seconds of an interview.

• Investigate the company and the job
- Find out pertinent information about the company
- Review the research conducted before applying for the job and fill in any gaps about
products, facilities and other details that may be discussed during the interview.

. advancement opportunities

- Prepare yourself for probable questions from the interviewer.
- Nervousness during an interview is natural, thus preparing to answer typical
questions like question regarding work experience, education, goals, self- concept
and relationships with others will help to relieve your anxiety.

- Be prepared to ask questions that demonstrate your interest.
- At the same time, your question help you learn more about how you might fit
with the position and the company.
- Keep your questions related to the job and the company.

1. What would be my major responsibilities?
2. What qualities are you seeking in the person for this job?
3. Does your company have training programs?
4. What would you like to see a person accomplish in this job?

If possible, ask someone to videotape you in a mock interview. Viewing the
interview will help you assess your interview skills, particularly your non verbal
skills and improve them.
• Bring appropriate information
Take to your interview an extra copy of your resume and reference list, two pens,
transcripts and letter of recommendationand commendation.
