Chaparrals are shrubby coastal areas located between 30-40 degrees north and south of the equator, characterized by hot, dry summers and mild, rainy winters. They consist of dense shrubs and scrub oak interspersed with some woodland. Common plant life includes blue oak, olive trees, fairy dust trees, and coyote bush. Herbivores like rabbits, weasels, butterflies and chipmunks live in chaparrals, while carnivores such as foxes, coyotes, rattlesnakes and big cats prey on them.
