Chanukah is an eight-day Jewish festival celebrated in November or December, commemorating the rededication of the Second Temple in Jerusalem. It recalls how the Maccabees revolted against the Seleucid Empire and recaptured and purified the temple, though there was only enough sacred oil left to light the menorah for one day - yet the oil miraculously lasted for eight days. Today, Chanukah is celebrated by lighting candles on a menorah from right to left over eight nights, playing games with a dreidel, eating fried foods, receiving gifts of "gelt" or coins.
