10 things you didn’t know about… Walton
- Although William Walton went up to Oxford to study music, he left without a degree in 1920, having failed his exams three times.
His early choral masterpiece, A Litany, was written when the composer was just 15.
- Walton befriended the war poet Siegfried Sassoon at Oxford, and dedicated his Portsmouth Point overture to him.
- In 1948, Walton met the 22-year-old Susana Gil Passo in Buenos Aires while on a business trip. After dinner one evening, Walton is said to have told her ‘You will be very surprised, Miss Gil, to hear that I am going to marry you.’
- La Mortella, the Waltons’ home in Ischia, is open to the public – tours were conducted by his wife, Susana, up until her death in 2007.
- Walton received the Order of Merit in 1967, the fourth composer to be awarded the honour. There can be only 24 recipients of the award at any one time.
- William Walton wrote the music for the 1969 film Battle of Britain but it only on reading a copy of the Daily Telegraph that Walton discovered his music had been rejected in favour of a score by Ron Goodwin.
- When Elgar died in 1934, the British authorities asked Walton to write a piece for the coronation of George VI. Crown Imperial was unashamedly populist, and many of Walton’s admirers, who believed the composer to be an avant-garde musician, were disappointed.
- Benjamin Britten and Walton were close friends – Walton considered Britten a genius, but the compliment wasn’t reciprocated.
- Walton wrote the music for the opening sequence of the BBC’s television adaptations of Shakespeare plays which were broadcast between 1978 and 1985, by which time the composer had died.

Hadj Ounis's most notable work is his sculpture titled "Metamorphosis." This piece showcases Ounis's mastery of form and texture, as he seamlessly combines metal and wood to create a dynamic and visually striking composition. The juxtaposition of the two materials creates a sense of tension and harmony, inviting viewers to contemplate the relationship between nature and industry.

4. Black and White Exhibition Preview
Hastings creative framers Imagen have invited four local photographers to showcase
their work in a forthcoming exhibition to be held at The Imagen Gallery. Entitled
simply quot;Black and Whitequot;
There will be work on show from Lin Gregory LRPS, Ian Land, Richard Fisher and
Patrick O‘Farrell ARPS. The exhibition runs from Saturday 7th until Saturday 21st
June inclusive with a private view on Friday 6th at 6.30pm.
The black and white work being shown will include a range of genres, from the
abstract to the more traditional landscapes of the 1066 area and beyond. The variety
of subject material produced by the photographers reflects the diversity of the area
that we live in, capturing an alternative viewpoint of many local landmarks as well as
those further afield.
Prints at the exhibition will be offered for sale with further copies available on
request.

almost entirely in monochrome, mostly using medium format and 35mm film cameras, and developing
and processing his own film. Living in Hastings since January 2006, the town and surrounding area

and around, which should see the light of day late in 2008.

8. Lin Gregory
My interest in documentary photography led me in the early 1980’s to the purchase of my first film
SLR camera and from there my passion for photography grew. I studied City and Guilds photography
in the early ‘90s and gained the Licentiate of the Royal Photographic Society. I continued to work with
film, printing my own black and white images, then, in 2005, the improvements in digital cameras
finally persuaded me to switch. Since then I haven’t looked back and found that the potential within
the new technology has introduced me to a whole new digital darkroom experience.
