4. Introduction
• Ethics and morality cannot be separated,
according to Islam, and neither can ethics and
law.
• Modern issues including those pertaining to
conception, abortion, organ donation, end-of-
life concerns, etc. should be openly discussed
and presented to the healthcare professionals.

5. Abortion • In the Islamic world, abortion—which is defined
as the termination of a pregnancy before the child
can survive outside the womb—has always been
a contentious topic.
• Sterilization (surgical to render a person
incapable of having children) is categorically
prohibited.
• Anyone who uses any measures to induce a
miscarriage faces harsh punishment in the
Islamic world. The woman's family is entitled to
compensation from the criminal who committed
the crime.

6. Cont.
• Islamic teachings allow alternative methods of birth
control with the consent of the spouses when a
couple is legally married.
• Abortion is illegal, except in situations when the
pregnancy poses a risk to the expectant mother's
life or where a significant congenital anomaly has
been identified in the fetus,.
• In cases of rape, abortion is an option, but it must
be performed during the first 40 days of pregnancy.

7. Assisted
Reproductive
Technology (ART)
• Islam permits all methods of reproduction if they
use the uterus, ovum, and semen of a couple that
is properly wed.
• Islamic law forbids the use of assisted reproductive
technology (ART), which makes it possible to use
sperm from donors to have children.
• In Islam, surrogacy is prohibited.
• IVF is only permitted if the pair is already married,
and only married men and women's sperm and
eggs are utilized in this procedure.

8. Cont.
• If the couple is still married at the time of the
treatment, they are allowed to freeze the
remaining fertilized eggs for use in the future.
• It is forbidden to use the saved sperm in
cases of divorce or husband passing away.
• With the couple's permission, the rule in Islam
permits the use of the eggs for study.

9. End-of-Life Ethical
Issues
• Only God has the power to take
someone's life because life is a holy
virtue.
• Even if it may hasten death, saving a life
is encouraged, and relieving pain with
analgesia is permitted.
• Not delivering a ventilator or withholding
CPR for a patient whose case is deemed
ineffective is not the same as murder.

10. Cont.
• The Presidency of the Administration of Islamic
Research, Riyadh, KSA, in their Fatwa states
that: “if three knowledgeable and trustworthy
physicians agreed that the patient condition is
hopeless; the life-supporting machines can be
withheld or withdrawn. The family members’
opinion is not included in decision-making as
they are unqualified to make such decisions”.
• Preventing nutrition and hydration to a person
is regarded as a form of murder according to
the Islamic jurisprudence.

11. Organ
Transplantation
• Organ transplantation decisions must consider
the Muslim community.
• The body should be honored after the soul has
left and death has been declared; mutilation is
prohibited, as well as cremation.
• A person cannot give their essential organs
because doing so could result in death or
suicide, both of which are crimes in Islam.
• In Islam, the trade in organs is forbidden.

12. Cont.
• The topic of genital organ donation was discussed
by the Islamic jurists present. Since gonads carry
most of the the donor's genetic material, they
forbade their transfer.
• The living donor's wishes and intentions should
guide all organ donation decisions, and his or her
choice should be fully respected.
• Additionally, it is acceptable for a Muslim to receive
or donate an organ from a non-Muslim.

13. Conclusion
In today’s presentation, we learned;
• Abortion can be done only according to the married couple’s
consent, if the pregnant mother’s life is endangered or if the
fetus suffers from any abnormality during pregnancy.
• Islam prohibited some of the ARTs like surrogacy, using any
other person’s sperms or eggs to have a child while on the other
hand, it permits to some of it like IVF, freezing of eggs but this
should consist of husband’s sperm and wife’s egg.
• In Islam, saving a life is encouraged but not struggling to give
someone another chance to live and withdrawing the life-support
machines is a sin.
• In the Islamic belief, the organ donation is permitted, until the
donor’s life is not being harmed, but trading it for a cost is
prohibited in Islam
