Created and presented with Colleen Graves. Design challenges have the power to encourage creativity in your students – by providing limitations and guidelines, students can actually become more creative. Learn strategies for creating design prompts, running challenges, and incorporating the design process into projects with your students. We’ll discuss how to create open-ended challenges and material-specific challenges in a way that will maximize your students’ creativity, as well as how to create passive design challenges that require minimal supervision. Examples will be given for elementary, middle, and high school, as creativity isn’t limited to an age range. Whether you’ve had a makerspace up and running for years or are just getting started with the Maker Movement, you will leave this session feeling equipped to lead your students through design challenges that will spark their creative genius.

Integrating STEM through hands-on learning in our classrooms will help to develop these skills in our students. We'll look at examples of how project-based learning and the Maker Movement have transformed learning at Stewart Middle Magnet.

Makey Makey NYSCATE 2014
This Spring I taught a 5 day class to our middle school students called Makey Makey. The class focused around the ideas of invention, creativity and imagination. Students were given a Makey Makey (a simple pre-programed circuit board that lets users control a computer by using alligator clips and anything that is conductive). Students were taught the elements of basic design, and circuitry. The students had to use the Makey Makey to create a final project that was original. The presentation will give attendees some insight about using a project based model for learning and exploration. I will also show videos of student work and possibly bring in a student or two to answer questions.

We'll also get the student perspective with testimonials from my students on their experiences in library leadership. I'll focus on a year-long collaboration with my 6th grade science classes where the teacher and I led a different maker focused project each quarter that tied in with her curriculum. This included projects on lab safety, earthquakes and weather detection devices. I'll also share examples of smaller, one-day collaborations I've done with science classes. We'll look at practical examples of ways to collaborate with your science teachers, as well as different makerspace supplies and activities that can help support your science classes. While these examples will be focused on middle school, the concepts and ideas can be applied and adapted to any grade level! If you're looking for ways to get your classes into the makerspace more in a way that ties in with curriculum, this session is for you.

We'll talk about how to apply learning space design theory to renovate your library. You'll learn how to survey your students, create a focus group, and use design thinking to brainstorm ideas for your space. We'll spend time brainstorming our spaces and making plans for the future. Participants will be able to explain why changes to the physical space are needed and will learn strategies that they can apply immediately, no matter what their budget. But using Instagram can be a powerful advocacy tool, and it doesn't have to take a ton of your time to keep up with it. I'll share strategies for coming up with posts, reaching out to your community and planning ahead so that you don't have to constantly worry about what to post when. I'll share examples from my own library Instagram account (@TPrepLibrary) and show you how I plan and schedule posts once a week. I'll also share some great IG accounts to follow for more ideas and inspiration. Whether you've never been on IG or you're a seasoned Bookstagrammer, you'll come away from this session with new ideas to try.

Creating Engaging Middle School Maker Days In Your Library Makerspace
Finding ways to get our middle schoolers into our library makerspace can sometimes be challenging – especially in a pandemic. Last year, we expanded our existing makerspace programming into afterschool Maker Days twice a week and it’s been a huge success. This year we’re continuing to grow by incorporating maker activities into the 6th grade science curriculum. Learn how we created design challenges and found fun activities that engaged our students in design and creativity.

For most of us, our libraries could use a great deal of care and feeding to develop them into the vibrant, exciting collections that will have our students clamoring to read more. But it can be so overwhelming to figure out where to start. In this session, we’ll talk about developing weeding strategies and creating a collection development plan that will slowly but surely bring your collection up to speed. We’ll talk about the important of diverse books, graphic novels as well as other current topics like genrefication. Come to this session and get ideas and strategies that will help you tend to your library collection and make it amazing.

Many of our school libraries still look like they did fifty years ago, yet they are no longer quiet, dusty book repositories. Librarians are leading the way in technology use and modern pedagogy in our schools - now we need to update our spaces to match. In this session, we'll discuss strategies for redesigning and rethinking the physical space of libraries, including practical and budget-friendly changes that can be implemented right away. We'll look at examples of a variety of library spaces that went through makeovers and discuss creating interactive environments including makerspaces.

This Old Library: How to Revamp, Reimagine and Revitalize Your Library
Many of us work in school libraries that were built in the 20th century. Our collections are a hodge-podge of different collection development strategies (or lack thereof) over the decades. Whether you’re taking over a new-to-you library program or you’ve been at your school for years, there are probably neglected spaces you would like to spruce up, programs you would like to create and new books that need to be added. It can be overwhelming to try to figure out where to get started. In this session, you’ll learn strategies for tackling that weeding project, improving usability in your space, changing up your furniture, building collaboration with teachers and more. No matter your grade level, years of experience or the age of your library space, you will come away from this session excited to reimagine your library.

Dear Dr. Kornbluth and Mr. Gorenberg,
The US House of Representatives is deeply concerned by ongoing and pervasive acts of antisemitic
harassment and intimidation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Failing to act decisively to ensure a safe learning environment for all students would be a grave dereliction of your responsibilities as President of MIT and Chair of the MIT Corporation.
This Congress will not stand idly by and allow an environment hostile to Jewish students to persist. The House believes that your institution is in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, and the inability or
unwillingness to rectify this violation through action requires accountability.
Postsecondary education is a unique opportunity for students to learn and have their ideas and beliefs challenged. However, universities receiving hundreds of millions of federal funds annually have denied
students that opportunity and have been hijacked to become venues for the promotion of terrorism, antisemitic harassment and intimidation, unlawful encampments, and in some cases, assaults and riots.
The House of Representatives will not countenance the use of federal funds to indoctrinate students into hateful, antisemitic, anti-American supporters of terrorism. Investigations into campus antisemitism by the Committee on Education and the Workforce and the Committee on Ways and Means have been expanded into a Congress-wide probe across all relevant jurisdictions to address this national crisis. The undersigned Committees will conduct oversight into the use of federal funds at MIT and its learning environment under authorities granted to each Committee.
• The Committee on Education and the Workforce has been investigating your institution since December 7, 2023. The Committee has broad jurisdiction over postsecondary education, including its compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, campus safety concerns over disruptions to the learning environment, and the awarding of federal student aid under the Higher Education Act.
• The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is investigating the sources of funding and other support flowing to groups espousing pro-Hamas propaganda and engaged in antisemitic harassment and intimidation of students. The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is the principal oversight committee of the US House of Representatives and has broad authority to investigate “any matter” at “any time” under House Rule X.
• The Committee on Ways and Means has been investigating several universities since November 15, 2023, when the Committee held a hearing entitled From Ivory Towers to Dark Corners: Investigating the Nexus Between Antisemitism, Tax-Exempt Universities, and Terror Financing. Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.
