Dear James,
One of my distinct privileges as chair of the Department of Communication Studies at
UNCW is asking my faculty for the names of students that they feel are worthy of
recognition. This recognition may be for specific achievements or character or some
combination of attributes and actions worthy of a Chair’s Letter of Distinction. Each
faculty member can nominate only one student per course they teach. You were
nominated in Spring 2015 by Mr. Frank Trimble who wrote:
James displayed exemplary “citizenship” introducing Piper Kerman as the 2015 Mimi
Cunningham Speaker Series Endowment featured guest. His preparation included consultation
with me, private rehearsal prior to the event, and early arrival at the venue for a sound check.
James delivered a warm, enthusiastic overview of Mimi Cunningham’s contributions to our
university/community/region followed by Piper Kerman’s background. A communication
studies major introducing the Mimi Cunningham Endowment speaker is an important
department tradition, and I’m pleased James accepted my invitation to represent our
department in fine fashion. Perhaps this letter will serve as another portfolio artifact reflecting
his significant value to an organization.
Thank you for contributing to the culture of excellence we strive to create and
maintain in our department. We hope that this small but heartfelt recognition is an
encouragement to you as well. We also hope that you will also communicate similar
thanks to those who contributed to your success here.
Sincerely,
Richard K. Olsen, Ph.D.
Chair, Department of Communication Studies
