Chain indexes link related concepts in a hierarchy so that each concept leads to the next most directly related one. A chained index displays concepts with the most directly related listed underneath. String indexes display a rotating list of index terms that make up a conceptual "string", with each term serving as an entry point to the others on the list, though the entries themselves are not all the same. An example shows how different topics related to the United States are linked in a string format.
