The portfolio document summarizes Lucas Chagas' projects from his Fall 2015 animation course. It includes a bouncing ball exercise to re-familiarize with After Effects basics. A personal logo animation taught how to simulate bubbles popping using shape layers and effects. The final project was an animated short of the Brazilian folk character Curupira. Storyboarding and planning were important pre-production steps to manage the workflow and meet deadlines for the challenging project.

2. BOUNCING BALL
As a rusty animator, the Boucing Ball project was pretty good exercise to
warm up and to bring back the basic principles of animation and the basic
After Efects commands and functions.
This exercise was a nice good skill to learn.
It is a basic function but it’s a
good way to start to learn about how
After Efects works and its useful tools.

3. PERSONAL BUMPER
The development process of the personal bumper had for me a strong meaning. I had already this idea for a personal logo using two thunder bolts (I have two tunderbolts tattooed on my both legs)
and the letter “Z” semiotically showing up between the two thunder shapes (“Z” from “ZUK”, the nickname which most of people call me by) but I never had the oportunity to design it. Thus before
I start to animate, I needed to design the logo. I also decided to teach myself how to make those bubles popping, which is a really interesting process using shapes on after effects and applying the
efect Roughen Edges. This process started to make me think about how I can use efects to simulate situations where before I sould animate everything frame by frame instead.

4. FINAL PROJECT: CURUPIRA
STORYBOARD
The post production part is really important and its
methodology can be implemented in any artistic
process. When you have everything planned and
organized, you can manage your workflow and your
deadlines better.
The final project was indeed a huge challenge. Since
the very beginning with the comcept definition, go-
ing through the planing/production steps ultil get on
the hands on part with storyboard, animatic and the
animation itself, I’ve learned tons of new possibilities
and techniques.
