The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), formerly known as the Food Stamp Program, provides food assistance to low-income individuals and families. It began as a pilot program in the 1960s and was made permanent in 1964 with the Food Stamp Act. SNAP eligibility and benefits vary by state but aim to help those in need gain access to adequate nutrition.

The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program
helps low income families and individuals receive
nutritional food for there well being.
This is the largest program In the domestic
hungry net.
This program varies state by state but its
common goal is to help the individuals and
families apply for assistance.

4. The Beginning:
The first food stamp program was tried in 1939-
1943. They where trying to figure out a system
that worked for society.
The pilot food stamp program was started in
1961-1964. “The pilot programs would retain the
requirement that the food stamps be
purchased, but eliminated the concept of special
stamps for surplus foods.”

5. The Start of It:
Food Stamp Act 1964. President Johnson asked
Congress to passed this act so the Pilot Food
Stamps was working on a more permanent
basis.
It also made provisions to the previous trials of
food stamps. It also helped many families to the
nutrition they need and improved the agricultural
business side also.
“The Department estimated that participation in a
national FSP would eventually reach 4 million, at
a cost of $360 million annually.”

Food Stamps Act of 1977: Tighten up the
restrictions on the program, increasing access to
those most in need and decreasing errors in
application process.
Cutback 1980’s: Some cutbacks where "addition
of a gross income eligibility test in addition to the
net income test for most households, temporary
freeze on adjustments of the shelter deduction
cap and the standard deduction and constraints
on future adjustments, annual adjustments in
food stamp allotments rather than semi-annual”

8. Applying:
“Anyone can apply for SNAP, but you and
the other people in your household must meet
certain conditions. Everyone who is applying in
your household must have or apply for a Social
Security number and be either a U.S. citizen”
Also people who are not citizens are also eligible
but have more requirements that they have to
meet.

Special rules apply to those who are elderly, which is 60
and older and those who are disabled.
Some of the requirements involve: “Receives Federal
disability or blindness payments under the Social Security
Act, including Supplemental Security Income (SSI) or
Social Security disability or blindness payments; or
Receives State disability or blindness payments based on
SSI rules; or Receives a disability retirement benefit
from a governmental agency because of a disability
considered permanent under the Social Security Act”
