The United States expanded its territories through treaties, annexation, and purchases. Territories were added through treaties that ended wars or through annexation of lands such as Texas joining as a state. One of the largest expansions of territory was the Louisiana Purchase which doubled the size of the country through a treaty with France to purchase the Louisiana Territory.
