This document discusses the dilemma of commercializing microfinance services in Africa. It notes that while commercialization is advocated to close the gap between demand and supply of microfinance, the level of investment required to transform NGOs into profitable institutions is often overlooked. The document questions whether commercialization alone can achieve the goals of expanding outreach and improving efficiency. It argues that governments and donors will need to continue playing a key role in building sustainable microfinance institutions in Africa that can then attract private capital. The document provides background for a workshop to have a realistic discussion about strategies for increasing access to financial services for the poor.
ACCION’s SOCIAL: A Practical Way for MFIs to Evaluate and Improve Social Perf...Meherunnesha (Nishat)
ACCION provides microloans and financial services to help the poor lift themselves out of poverty. It began in the 1960s focusing on community development in Latin America. In the 1970s, it shifted to microlending and developed a methodology using solidarity groups. Over the decades, it expanded its network across Latin America and into other regions while increasing its scale, standardizing operations, and evolving its lending methodology. Today it has 28 partners across the globe and over 798,000 active clients. Its approach includes creating and training microfinance institutions, developing new financial products, and using tools like the CAMEL evaluation system to improve partners' performance. It faces challenges around further expansion, broadening services, and maintaining private donations.

This document discusses the history and evolution of microfinance and impact measurement. It traces microfinance from the 1950s-1970s when it focused on subsidizing farmers, to the 1980s-1990s when the financial systems approach grew in prominence. In the early 2000s, microfinance saw rising commercialization and interest from investors. More recently, there is new focus on social performance and randomized controlled trials to better assess impact, with studies showing some positive effects but also limitations. The document emphasizes the ongoing need for research to understand microfinance's role and impacts.

Microbes too small to see with the naked eye can enter the body and make us sick. Different diseases like the flu, chickenpox, and cancer are caused by microbes. To stay healthy, we should exercise, wear warm clothing in cold weather, wash our hands daily, eat healthy foods, and see a doctor if we feel ill.
The document discusses the skin and its functions. It describes skin as a resistant and flexible organ that protects us from microbes, wind, and parts of the environment. It lists some key features of skin like pores, hairs, and fingerprints. It also mentions that skin comes in different types and colors, can be white, black, or tanned darker colors from sun exposure. The final sentences stress the importance of taking care of skin.
We begin growing in our mother's womb in the uterus. We grow very rapidly at first and then slowly over time until around 18-20 years of age. To grow well, we must eat a variety of healthy foods like vegetables, fruit, meat, fish, milk, and eggs, exercise through activities like walking and sports, and get sufficient sleep. Our growth occurs in stages from infants to children to adolescents and eventually adults.
The document describes the human reproductive system and pregnancy process in 3 sentences:
The female reproductive system includes the uterus and ovaries which release eggs, while the male system contains testicles that produce sperm. During pregnancy, a sperm enters an egg in the ovaries and begins growing into a baby over 9 months receiving nutrients through the umbilical cord. Newborns may be delivered early and placed in an incubator, and will eat from their mother's breast after birth.
The circulatory system is composed of the heart, blood vessels, and blood. The heart is an important muscle located in the chest cavity protected by the ribs and lungs. It beats around 70 times per minute to pump blood through the veins and arteries. Blood is a red liquid that circulates through the entire body carrying oxygen, of which humans have 5 liters. There are 4 main blood groups identified by blood type. Maintaining a healthy lifestyle through exercise, diet, and avoiding smoking can help prevent diseases of the circulatory system.
