who are a part of their program. Since our organization is a non-profit, their
values really do lie in helping the community at large. Furthermore, the Boy’s
and Girl’s club is a name known all over the country, so it’s outreach is what
makes it stand out, no matter where in the country it is. The fact that they
are accepting of all types of people and dedicated to giving kids the future
they deserve despite the hardships they have already endured, makes them
such a strong organization, especially in SLO county where community is
highly valued.
Another key point of our SWOT analysis is how the Boy’s and Girl’s club has
limited funds because it is a non-profit organization. One hardship that
nonprofits seem to consistently face is struggling to have enough funds to
keep their facility in operation and updated. This is one major downfall that
the Boy’s and Girl’s club in specific faces, because with so many kids using
their facility on a weekly basis, their infrastructure inevitably takes a toll. A
national sponsor would immensely help this situation by providing the
different clubs with equipment, donations that could be used for various
things around the clubhouse, or both. We suggested/discussed this with our
supervisor during our preliminary meeting with her.

Strategic Programming Directions:
1. For teenagers that attend the Boy’s and Girl’s Club, implementing
scheduled visits to local colleges and having career counselors visit the
clubs could be a proactive way to get the kids to start thinking about their
future/career
2. For kids of all ages at the club, scheduling field trips to local spots in
SLO county (i.e. aquarium, downtown SLO, local sports game, SLOMA) as
well as scheduling visits to the club (EMT/Firefighters, nutrition class) to
promote pursuing hobbies/interests and as a follow up having outreach for
the kids who want to become more involved in said hobby/interest
3. Implement a program that allows the kids at the club to give back to
others in the area (as volunteers help them at their organization). Allot a
certain time slot every week where the kids walk to a neighboring
organization (i.e. another non-profit, school, church) and volunteer their time.
CEP Part B
Defining the Target Audience
● Our target audience for this project is really quote broad. We are
targeting primarily kids 12 and under, given the movie being shown,
but by default our audience also includes parents or guardians of
those kids since they are unable to get themselves to the event on
their own. For the kids specifically, they are of any/all gender, might
be members of the Boy’s and Girls’s Club already in which case they
might have a troubled home life/low socio-economic status. However,
this event isn’t specifically designed for members of the Boy’s and
Girl’s Club since we marketed it to SLO county as a whole, so it is
6. fair to say that it is marketed towards those of any/all socio-economic
statuses as well as ethnicities.
Questionnaire
1. For the Boy’s and Girl’s Club’s next event, which of these would you like
to see most?
A) Trivia Night
B) Carnival
C) Movie Night
2. For any of the options listed above, what theme would you like to see
most?
A) Toy Story
B) Frozen
C) Finding Nemo
3. For any of the given events, would you be able to contribute one store-
bought item to donate (must be brand new)?
A) Yes
B) No
4. If you have been to an event at the Boy’s and Girl’s Club before, what did
you like most about it and what did you think could’ve been improved?
5. Do you think that the events held by the Boy’s and Girl’s Club are
marketed to everyone in the community (even if you are not a member)?
6. Have you ever attended an event at the Boy’s and Girl’s Club? If so, how
many?
7. Are you or anyone you know a past/current member of the Boy’s and
Girl’s Club?
Demographic Questionnaire
1. For their next event, where should the Boy’s and Girl’s Club host it?
A) At the Clubhouse
B) Another location, please describe: _________________
2. How far away do you live from the Boy’s and Girl’s Club?
A) 0-10 miles
B) 11-20
C) 21+
3. Have you had any instances in your life that would qualify you to be a
member of the Boy’s and Girl’s club, in the past or currently?
7. ● The questionnaire will be distributed to all businesses that we ask for
donations, as well as through all forms of marketing that we do. We
will be asking the supervisor or whoever we talk to at the business to
have all employees participate in the survey, if possible. We will be
able to see when surveys have been answered as we will be using
the website survey monkey to conduct it, to make the process
quicker and easier.
● The Survey will be sent out upon initial contact with the businesses,
that way we can maximize the time they have to respond to us. We
will be looking through responses as they come in to help us plan our
event. The survey will close 2 weeks before the day of the event.
● Results: The results of our survey were overall what we expected
more or less in terms of the responses we received, and overall are
really going to help us plan an amazing event. Overwhelmingly, our
responses showed the most interest for a movie night, so that is how
we decided upon the actual event to do. We also picked the theme
(toy story) based on the responses to the survey. We found that
most, but not all of our potential attendees would be able to bring a
donation item to the event. Some things that people seemed to love
about the BGC are how inclusive the events are, and somethings
that need to be improved are the facility itself and possibly hiring
more staff/volunteers. Most of the responses indicated that the
majority of people have not attended a Boy’s and Girl’s Club event in
the past. In addition, our responses indicated that most people know
someone else who was a part of the Boy’s and Girl’s Club at some
point.
● Demographic Results: For the demographic specific questionnaire, it
seems as though the option to keep the event at the Boy’s and Girl’s
Club, as it has previously been. Most of the people who answered
our survey live within 20 miles of the Boy’s and Girl’s Club. Finally,
most people who answered the survey said they had not
experienced any situation that would allow them to be a part of the
Boy’s and Girl’s Club.

Program Goals and Design
1. Trivia Night (Called: What is… Boy’s and Girl’s Club Trivia Night):
This trivia night will be a simplified version of jeopardy, where kids
can come and bring family/friends for a fun night of trivia questions
inspired by classic disney/pixar movies! Snacks will be available for
purchase and the winner of the trivia gets to take home a prize!
Target Market: Kids, ages 10-13 (with chaperones if necessary), both
boys and girls welcome!
Problem Statement: These kids, ages 10-13 need to engage in an
experience that improves their decision making and memory skills
2. Carnival (Called: Fall Festival): This carnival will bring people of all
ages back to their childhood for a night! The BGC will be completely
transformed into an old school carnival fit with concessions stands, a mini
petting zoo, and of course carnival games. Tickets will be available for
purchase and prizes will be given out to those with the most tokens at the
end of the night!
Target Market: Although the carnival games will be geared towards younger
kids, people of all ages/gender are invited to the festival!
Problem Statement: All people need to engage in an experience that allows
them to let loose for a night and reminisce on their childhood!
3. Movie Night (Called: Lights, camera, action!): This movie night will be held
at the Boy’s and Girl’s Club and will be featuring the fan favorite movie, Toy
Story. Snacks will be available for purchase and the night will end with a
surprise raffle!
Target Market: Kids, ages 7-12, along with parent/guardian chaperones,
boys and girls are both welcome!
Problem Statement: These kids, ages 7-12, need to engage in an
experience that shows the value of family, friends and loved ones!
Time to expand:
9. ● Program name: Lights, camera, action! A movie night that the kids
won’t forget. This movie night will take place at our local Boy’s and
Girl’s Club in San Luis Obispo. We will be showing a childhood
favorite, Toy Story. Drinks and snacks will be available at the event,
selling for 50 cents each! The families admission ticket is one toy per
family. Toy story balloons and decorations will fill the place.
Attendees are welcome to wear their favorite Toy Story costume and
if they choose not to, we will provide them will plastic Woody hats. To
make the event an even more memorable experience, the volunteers
will be dressed to the theme as well.
● Statement of the need: The Boy’s and Girl’s Club mainly needs this
event to be successful so they can gain more publicity in the
community and therefore hopefully grow the number of club
members.
● Target Market: Families who live locally in the San Luis Obispo
County
● Three measurable program outcome goals:
○ Have an enjoyable night where families are able to connect
and spend quality family time together
○ The families feel as if they are apart of a community who
loves and cares for them
○ Have the children meet other children all while watching a fun
family friendly movie
● Design Thinking:
1. Interview: For my interview, I chose to talk to one of my long-time
friends from home who worked closely with the Boy’s and Girl’s Club for many
years as a volunteer in our hometown. Upon informing her that my group was going
to be helping them put on an event, she immediately sprung to life. She talked about
how the best thing about being a volunteer was seeing how excited the kids got
when they had events at the club. She said that it was so rewarding to see all the kids
enjoying the events in their entirety, and that they were gratefulno matter how big
or small they were. In addition, she touched on how she believes the events are one
of the most important aspects of the club, because they make the kids feelspecial
and can get their mind off of anything negative that they may be experiencing at
home or elsewhere, even if it is just for a couple of hours.
10. Interview Questions:
1. When did you start working with the Boy’s and Girl’s Club?
2. What was the most rewarding part of working at the Club?
3. What made you want to start volunteering with the organization?
4. What made the events at the Boy’s and Girl’s Club so memorable?
5. Can you recall one memory of working with the Boy’s and Girl’s Club that
was especially touching?
Problem Statement: The Boy’s and Girl’s Club needs a way to increase membership
and help the community by hosting memorable events that will make attendees want
to return and support the club.
2. Digging Deeper: When I revisited my interview in order to really understand
why events are such a crucial part of the Boy’s and Girl’s Club, my friend
mentioned that while she was volunteering, she once had the opportunity to talk to a
young girl who she said she had never noticed at the club before. She recalls how
the girl explained that this was her first time at the club, coincidentally on a day
where they were holding an event for the kids, and how she was going to be coming
a lot more now because her single mother had recently been incarcerated. At the end
of their conversation, my friend asked if there was anything she could do, and the
little girl told her that being at the Boy’s and Girl’s Club, where they cared enough
to put on an amazing event for the kids was all the support she needed.
3. Capture Findings: Through this event, we are trying to put on an event that
allows the kids and everyone at the club to let loose, have fun and forget anything
else they may be dealing with in their life. We want them to be able to make
memories and creative a positive environment for them to enjoy.
11. Insight:After completing my interview, it was very clear that my friend as a
volunteer cared deeply about the kids at the Boy’s and Girl’s Club as well as
the mission for their organization. One of the main goals for my group is to
hopefully match the experience that my friend had as a volunteer, and in that
way we can help the club as much as we can through our efforts.
4. Take a Stand with a Point of View: Our RPTA 210 group needs to put on a
creative and unique event for the Boy’s and Girl’s Club because we want to help
promote an organization that is such a big help to the community and because we
want to give back to our local community firsthand.
5. Sketch at least 5 radical ways to meet your users’ needs:
6. Share your solutions and capture feedback: I shared my solutions with
my friend, my group members and some of my classmates. The response I
got was very positive towards how we can make our event really special and
stand out. Some of my classmates did point out that some of my ideas might
not be attainable due to limited funds and time, and I appreciated their
12. constructive criticism because it helps me be realistic with what I can do by
the time the day of our event actually comes around.
7. Reflect and generate a new solution:
8. Build your solution:
9. Share your solution and get feedback:
For my prototype, I built a toy story themed popcorn cup. When my group
was discussing their initial ideas for the movie night, we all thought that
13. theming the popcorn and snacks like the movie would be a perfect way to get
the kids excited and get everyone into theme. I think what worked here is the
practicality of the holder. Not only does it hold the popcorn, but it can be a
unique take home souvenir for the kids to the remember the event by. I think
what could be improved would be making variations of the popcorn cups so
not every like the wild west that we could utilize. Finally, one more idea I
had to make this even better would be that a couple special boxes of popcorn
could have a surprise toy or raffle ticket at the bottom. kid gets the same one
and that way they feel special. One question I received was how would this
translate over to something a little more difficult like candy, which can be
hard to theme. My response to that is that there are actually quite a few
candies that are themed
