CBeebies Land opens at Alton Towers
Children rejoice - and parents prepare to raid the kids’ piggy banks
Alton Towers
The stars of CBeebies get the red carpet treatment
An integral element of British TV, the BBC’s CBeebies channel is adored by kids and adults alike for its
comprehensive programmes and much-loved characters. Now it’s been reimagined as a tangible attraction at Alton
Towers.
This summer, countless children will be begging to visit the UK's most popular theme park to see their favourite
entertainers. Many of the gang feature, including Igglepiggle and friends, Mr. Bloom and Justin Fletcher, who's treated
like a rock star by little ones and whose alter ego, Mr Tumble, is the only clown that doesn’t scare the bejesus out of
most of us.
Situated in the lush Staffordshire countryside, Alton Towers is famous for its hair-raising rollercoasters such as
Nemesis and The Smiler. Although there are rides for younger visitors, such as Charlie and the Chocolate Factory
and Frog Hopper, CBeebies Land is a welcome addition for the under 6s (under 4s even go free). Costing a cool £9
million to build, CBeebies Land is five acres of enchantment. For anyone familiar with the shows, it's immediately
recognisable – from the purple and yellow CBeebies branding, to the sound of Upsy Daisy’s mellifluous giggles.
Whilst there are moving rides such as Postman Pat’s Parcel Post, In the Night Garden Magical Boat Ride, and the
monorailed Get Set Go Tree Top Adventure, there’s also some good old-fashioned fun: a Tree Fu Tom adventure
playground; a showtime arena where the ZingZillas and Mike the Knight make live appearances; and Justin’s House
Pie-O-Matic Factory where people of all ages can let off steam by shooting soft balls at each other.
Alton Towers
The immersive attraction, Mr Bloom's Allotment
Perhaps even more impressive (from a parent’s point of view, at least) are the interactive attractions: the Something
Special Sensory Garden is simple yet captures little ones’ imaginations, and the excellent Mr Bloom’s Allotment is a
delightful piece of live theatre where actors engage in a video ‘conversation’ with the nation’s most charming fictional
gardener (he has quite a following amongst mums, too), and where ‘tiddlers’ meet the veggies.
There’s also a baby-friendly cafe, picnic areas and a lost person centre, as well as the obligatory photo studio and
shop where distracted adults will part with a small fortune for an easy life.
CBeebies is big business, but its ethos is so well meaning, progressive and educationally focused that it’s hard not to
appreciate it. The brand-spanking new, vibrantly coloured and affable land that honours it is a timely and savvy
inclusion to the park, though expect queues – get there early to miss the worst.
