Start By:
A. Separate the transmission and bevel gears. Refer to , "Transmission and Bevel Gears -
Separate".

Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during
performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair
of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers
before opening any compartment or disassembling any component
containing fluids.
Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Dealer Service
Tool Catalog" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain
fluids on Caterpillar products.
Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.
Note: The transmission modulating valves must be recalibrated if any of the following procedures
are performed:
• The transmission modulating valve and/or the solenoid is replaced.
• The transmission is serviced or the transmission is replaced.
• The electronic control module is replaced.
ReferenceRefer to Testing and Adjusting, "Calibration".
Note: The friction discs and the clutch plates from the individual clutches must be kept in the
correct order. The friction discs and the clutch plates must be kept with the original clutch
housings. The different clutches use different friction material. The friction discs and the clutch
plates must not be mixed together.

1. Position the transmission onto Tooling (A) . The weight of the transmission is
approximately 458 kg (1010 lb). Mark all the housings for alignment during the assembly
procedure.
2. Remove O-ring seals (1) and (2) from the transmission cover.

3. Remove fittings (6) and the O-ring seals.
4. Remove bolts (8) and the strips.
5. Remove tubes (5) and the seals. Remove tube (7) and the seals.
6. Remove locknut (3) . Push connector (4) out of the case.

7. Disconnect harness assembly (9) .
8. Remove bolts (10) and remove valve assembly (11) .

9. Remove sleeves (12) .
10. Remove bolt (13) and remove tube assembly (14) and the O-ring seal.

11. Use Tooling (C) in order to remove retaining ring (16) . Remove rotor (15) .
12. Disconnect harness assemblies (17) .

13. Remove bolts (18) and bracket assembly (20) .
14. Remove retaining ring (19) .

Personal injury can result from being struck by parts propelled by a
released spring force.
Make sure to wear all necessary protective equipment.
Follow the recommended procedure and use all recommended tooling to
release the spring force.
15. Attach Tooling (B) and a suitable lifting device to manifold (22) . The weight of manifold
(22) is approximately 23 kg (51 lb).
16. Remove bolts (21) and remove manifold (22) .

17. Use Tooling (D) in order to remove retaining ring (23) from manifold (22) . Remove
bearing (24) from manifold (22) .

18. Remove piston (25) . Remove seal rings (26) and (27) (not shown) from piston (25) .
Remove friction discs and clutch plate (28) .
19. Remove dowels (29) and springs (30) .
20. Use two people in order to remove ring gear (31) and the clutch. The weight of ring gear
(31) and the clutch is approximately 41 kg (91 lb).

21. Remove retaining ring (32) from ring gear (31) .

22. Remove housing assembly (33) , friction discs (34) , clutch plates (35) , and reaction plate
(36) from ring gear (31) .

Personal injury can result from being struck by parts propelled by a
released spring force.
Make sure to wear all necessary protective equipment.
Follow the recommended procedure and use all recommended tooling to
release the spring force.
23. Use a suitable press and Tooling (J) in order to compress disc springs (44) .
24. Remove retaining ring (37) and retainer plate (38) from housing assembly (33) .
25. Remove disc springs (44) . Remove O-ring seal (39) . Remove seal rings (40) and (42) from
carrier (41) .

Note: Carrier (41) will be destroyed if carrier (41) is removed.
26. If carrier (41) must be removed, use a suitable chisel in order to break carrier (41) and
remove carrier (41) from housing (43) . After carrier (41) is removed, remove the pin that
holds carrier (41) in position.
27. Install Tooling (B) and a suitable lifting device to housing assembly (45) . The weight of
housing assembly (45) is approximately 49 kg (107 lb).
28. Install Tooling (E) at Locations (X) . Clamp the two pistons inside housing assembly (45) .
29. Remove housing assembly (45) . Remove Tooling (E) .

30. Remove piston (46) from housing assembly (45) . Remove seal rings (47) and (48) .
31. Remove piston (51) from housing assembly (45) . Remove seal rings (49) and (50) .

32. Remove friction discs and clutch plates (52) . Remove springs (53) .

33. Use Tooling (C) in order to remove retaining ring (54) . Remove gear (55) .

34. Remove sun gear (56) and planetary carrier (57) .

35. Remove retaining ring (64) and bearing (65) from planetary carrier (57) .
36. Use a suitable punch in order to push pin (63) into planetary shaft (59) . Remove planetary
shaft (59) , washers (58) and (62) , planetary gear (61) , and bearing (60) . Remove pin (63)
from planetary shaft (59) . Repeat for the remaining planetary shafts.
