Start By:
a. Remove the pump drive. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Pump Drive - Remove".

1. With torque converter housing (3) placed on suitable cribbing, attach Tooling (A) to torque converter
housing (3). The weight of torque converter housing (3) is approximately 104 kg (230 lb).
2. Support bearing cage assembly (2) with suitable cribbing, allowing access to bolts (1). Remove bolts
(1). Use a suitable lifting device to remove torque converter housing (3) and place on Tooling (B).

3. Remove retaining ring (4). Remove gear assembly (5).

4. Remove bearing cone (6) and bearing cup (7). Repeat this step for the opposite side.

8. Remove idler gear assembly (11) and bearing assembly (12).

9. Attach tooling (D) to torque converter housing (3). Use a suitable lifting device to reposition torque
converter housing (3) 180 degrees on Tooling (B). The weight of torque converter housing (3) is
approximately 91 kg (200 lb).

5. Install the O-ring seal onto speed sensor (19). Install speed sensor (19).
6. Install bolt (18). Tighten bolt (18) to a torque of 14 ± 3 N·m (124 ± 26.5 lb in)

7. Lower the temperature of bearing cup (17). Install bearing cup (17). Install the cover plate.

10. Install bolts (13). Tighten bolts (13) to a torque of 55 ± 10 N·m (41 ± 7.4 lb ft).
11. Install Tooling (A). Use suitable lifting device to reposition torque converter housing (3) 180
degrees. The weight of the torque converter housing (3) is approximately 104 kg (230 lb).

Note: Typical Example.
12. Use Tooling (B) to measure the end play of pump drive gear (20). The end play measurement must
be 0.10 to 0.20 mm (0.004 to 0.008 inch). Add or remove shims in order to obtain the correct end
play.
13. Repeat steps for the remaining pump drive gear.

bearing cage assembly (2) is approximately 38 kg (84 lb).
23. Install bolts (1).

Note: Lubricate O-ring seals lightly with the lubricant that is being sealed.

1. The weight of torque converter housing (7) is approximately 136 kg (300 lb). Attach tooling (A) and
a suitable lifting device to torque converter housing (7).

1. Replace all gaskets and check all seals for serviceability.
2. Install the transmission onto Tooling (A).
3. Note the location of the transmission wiring harness and any associated brackets and set to the side.

4. Remove bolts (1), the washers, and the clips. Mark the location of the clips.
5. Remove torque converter housing (2) and the gasket. Discard the gasket.

6. Remove bolts (3) and the washers. Remove pump (4).
7. Inspect the pump for any wear or damage. Refer to "Reuse and Salvage Guidelines" , (CX38 Transmission Pump
Inspection Guideline) for the correct inspection procedure.
Note: Failure to inspect the pump may result in future pump failure.

8. Remove bolts (5) and the washers. Note the location of bolts (5). Remove cover (7) and the gasket. Discard the gasket.
