C. Remove the final drive. See Disassembly and Assembly, "Final Drive (Drive and Steering
Axle) - Remove".

1. Remove snap ring (1) .
2. Use tooling (A) in order to remove planetary gear (2) .
3. Remove snap ring (3) and thrust washer (4) from the center of the planetary carrier.

4. Remove bearing (5), O-ring (6), and bearing race (7) from hub (8) .
5. Turn over the hub. Pry out seal ring (9). Remove bearing race (10) from the bore of the hub.

6. Remove two snap rings (11) from planetary gear. Remove two washers (12) and roller
bearing (13) .

Final Drive (Drive and Steering Axle)(Rear) - Assemble
SMCS - 4050-016-RE
Assembly Procedure
1. Install roller bearing (13), two washers (12), and two snap rings (11) .

2. Use a press in order to install the bearing race. Apply some 9S-3263 Thread Lock
Compound to the outer diameter of seal (9). Use a press in order to install seal (9) .
3. Use a press in order to install bearing race (7). Install O-ring (6) .

4. Install snap ring (3) and thrust washer (4) into the center of the planetary carrier.
5. Install the planetary gears. Secure the gears with snap ring (1) .

Final Drive (Drive and Steering Axle)(Rear) - Install

Installation Procedure
1. Install bearing (15) onto the housing for the steering knuckle.

2. Lubricate the seal in the bore of the hub. Install the hub onto the steering knuckle. Install the
outer hub bearing in order to secure the hub.
3. Install internal gear (13) .

4. Install slotted nut (12). Ensure that chamfered side of slotted nut (12) is facing outward.
5. Use tooling (A) in order to tighten slotted nut (12). Tighten the slotted nut to a rolling torque
of 46 N·m (34 lb ft).
Note: If the old bearings were reused, the rolling torque should be 27 N·m (20 lb ft).

6. After the proper rolling torque has been attained, install lock plate (11). Tighten bolts (10)
to a torque of 69 N·m (51 lb ft).
Note: Use new bolts in order to secure the lock plate.
7. Install washers (17) and (18). The flat face of washer (18) should be on the inside.
8. Install snap ring (19) .
9. Calculate the end play of the sun gear of the axle shaft.

a. Use a depth gauge and a straight edge in order to measure dimension (I). Dimension
(I) is the distance from the flange surface to the contact face of the thrust washer. An
example of dimension (I) is 166.2 mm (6.5 inch).
b. Straighten the axle and push the sun gear into the axle. Use a depth gauge and the
straight edge in order to determine dimension (II). Dimension (II) is the distance from
the end of the sun gear shaft to the flange surface of the hub. An example of
dimension (II) is 163.1 mm (6.4212 inch).
c. Subtract dimension (II) from dimension (I). Subtract the required end play from the
difference of dimensions (I) and (II). The remaining distance is the proper width of
the thrust washer that is located in the center of the planetary carrier. Ensure that the
proper thrust washer is installed in the planetary carrier. If necessary, change the
thrust washer. See Disassembly and Assembly, "Final Drive (Drive and Steering
Axle) (Rear) - Assemble".
Note: Refer to the Specifications Manual for the proper end play.

10. Use a suitable lifting device in order to install planetary carrier (5). It may be necessary to
move the planetary gears slightly in order to mesh the gears with the sun gear.
11. Install two socket head bolts (4). Tighten bolts (4) to a torque of 55 N·m (41 lb ft).

12. Install final drive drain plug (2). Tighten plug (2) to a torque of 120 N·m (89 lb ft).
13. Fill the final drives with the proper lubricants. See Operation and Maintenance Manual for
the proper lubricants and volumes.
End By:
a. Install the tie rods. See Disassembly and Assembly, "Tie Rods (Steering) (Rear) - Remove
and Install".
b. Install the rear axle. See Disassembly and Assembly, "Drive and Steering Axle (Rear) -
Install".
c. Install the tires and the wheels. See Disassembly and Assembly, "Tires & Wheels - Remove
and Install".

Drive and Steering Axle Housing (Rear) - Remove
SMCS - 3020-011-RE; 3260-011-RE
Removal Procedure
Start By:
B. Remove the rear axle. See Disassembly and Assembly, "Drive and Steering Axle (Rear) -
Remove".
1. Remove the cotter pin. Remove tie rod nut (1). Remove the ball joint end of the tie rod from
steering housing (2). See Disassembly and Assembly, "Tie Rod (Rear) - Remove and
Install".

2. Remove the drain plug for the differential housing. Drain the differential housing fluid into
a suitable container.
3. Use a suitable lifting device in order to support the axle housing. Support the axle housing
at the arrows.
4. Remove bolts (3) from the axle housing.

5. Use a suitable lifting device in order to remove the axle housing. Lift the axle housing at the
arrows.
Note: The weight of the axle housing is approximately 250 kg (550 lb).

Drive and Steering Axle Housing (Rear) - Disassemble
SMCS - 3020-015-RE; 3260-015-RE
Disassembly Procedure
Start By:
B. Remove the final drive. See Disassembly and Assembly, "Final Drive (Drive and Steering
Axle) (Rear) - Remove".
1. Remove the drain plug for the differential housing in order to drain the differential housing.
Drain the housing into a suitable container.
2. Remove snap ring (1). Remove thrust washers (2) and (3) .

Note: It may be necessary to push the axle into the housing slightly in order to remove the
snap ring and the washers. It may be necessary to pull the axle out of the housing slightly in
order to remove the snap ring and the washers.
3. Measure the distance (X). The distance (X) is the length between the bottom of adjustment
nut (4) and the top of bolt (5). Record this measurement for assembly purposes. Remove nut
(4) and bolt (5) .
4. Remove the ball joint end of the tie rod. See Disassembly and Assembly, "Tie Rods
(Steering) (Rear) - Remove and Install".
5. Remove four bolts (6). Remove two plastic caps (7) .

6. Use a suitable lifting device in order to support the housing for the steering knuckle. Use
forcing screws in order to push the bearing and pin (8) out of the housing.
7. Separate bearing (9) from pin (8). Remove the O-ring (10) .
Note: It is important to note the placement of the shims. Retain the proper shims with the
corresponding pins.

8. Remove the four bolts and the plastic caps from the bottom of the housing for the steering
knuckle. Use forcing screws in order to remove the pin from the bottom of the housing for
the steering knuckle. Separate bearing (11) from pin (12). Remove O-ring (13) .
Note: It is important to note the placement of the shims. Retain the proper shims with the
corresponding pins.
9. Use a suitable lifting device in order to remove the housing for the steering knuckle.
10. Remove seal (14) and bushing (15) from the bore of the housing for the steering knuckle.
Note: It may be necessary to destroy seal (14) in order to remove the seal.
