parts for replacement. Connect tube assemblies (4) to the stick cylinder. Connect lubrication line (7)
to the stick cylinder.
12. Fill the hydraulic oil tank with oil to the correct level. Lubricate the support pins for the stick
cylinder. Refer to the Operation & Maintenance Manual for the correct procedure.
13. Start the machine, and run it at low idle speed. Move the control lever for the stick cylinder so
the cylinder rod extends to its halfway position; then retract the cylinder rod. The cylinder should be
cycled this way approximately ten times to remove the air from the hydraulic system. Recheck the

NOTE: Several different stick cylinder groups are available. The disassembly and assembly
procedure which follows is similar for the stick cylinder groups. However, reference must be made
to the 322B & 322B L Excavator Attachments Specifications module, SENR1637, for the correct
specifications for a specific stick cylinder group.
Fluid Spillage Containment
Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection,
maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the machine. Be prepared to collect the fluid with
suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing
fluids. Refer to "Tools And Shop Products Guide", NENG2500 for tools and supplies suitable to
collect and contain fluids in Caterpillar machines. Dispose fluids according to local regulations and
mandates.

Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids. Refer to "Tools And Shop Products Guide", NENG2500 for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids in Caterpillar machines. Dispose fluids according to local regulations and mandates. At operating temperature, the hydraulic oil is hot and under pressure. Hot oil can cause burns. To prevent possible personal injury, release the pressure in the implement hydraulic circuits (boom, stick and bucket) before any hydraulic lines or components are disconnected and removed. 1. Release the pressure in the implement hydraulic circuits (boom, stick, and bucket) before any hydraulic lines or components are disconnected or removed as follows: a. Start the engine. Fully extend the stick and bucket. Lower the stick and bucket to the ground. b. Shut off the engine, and place key in the "ON" position. Put the hydraulic activation control lever in the "UNLOCK" position. c. Move the control levers for boom, stick and swing to all full stroke positions. This will release any pressure that might be present in the pilot system. 1/6 322B EXCAVATOR WITH FIELD INSTALLED COMBINE/ROTATE FUNCTION... 2019/10/27 https://127.0.0.1/sisweb/sisweb/techdoc/techdoc_print_page.jsp?returnurl=/sis...
  • 18. d. Return the key to "OFF" position. e. Slowly loosen the fill plug on the hydraulic tank, and release the pressure. f. Tighten the fill plug on the hydraulic tank to as torque of 68 ± 7 N·m (50 ± 5 lb ft). g. The pressure in the hydraulic system has been released and lines and components can be removed. 2. Fasten a hoist to stick cylinder (3) as shown. 3. A small amount of oil will drain from tube assemblies (4) when they are disconnected. Disconnect two tube assemblies (4) at the head end of the stick cylinder. Put plugs in the ends of the tube assemblies to prevent oil loss and to keep contaminants out of the hydraulic system. Disconnect lubrication line (7) for the mounting pin assembly at the head end of the stick cylinder. 4. Remove pin assembly retaining bolt (1), the washer, pin assembly (2) and the spacer. Remove pin assembly retaining bolt (6), the washer, pin assembly (5) and the spacer. Remove stick cylinder (3). The weight of the stick cylinder is 297 kg (655 lb). NOTE: Machines may be equipped with shims between the stick cylinder and boom at the stick cylinder-to-boom pin joint and at the stick cylinder and stick at the stick cylinder-to-stick pin joint. For assembly purposes, put identification marks on the shims as to their location. 5. Remove the shims (if so equipped) at the stick cylinder-to-boom pin joint and the stick cylinder-to -stick pin joint. NOTE: The following steps are for installation of the stick cylinder. 6. Make sure the pin bores in the stick cylinder, boom and stick are clean and free of dirt prior to installation of the stick cylinder. 7. Fasten a hoist to stick cylinder (3), and put in position on the boom and stick. Make sure the pin bores in the stick cylinder are in alignment with the pin bores in the stick and boom. 8. Apply 5P-0960 Multipurpose Grease on pin assemblies (2) and (5). Temporarily install the two pin assemblies. Do not remove the hoist from the stick cylinder at this time. 2/6 322B EXCAVATOR WITH FIELD INSTALLED COMBINE/ROTATE FUNCTION... 2019/10/27 https://127.0.0.1/sisweb/sisweb/techdoc/techdoc_print_page.jsp?returnurl=/sis...
  • 19. Typical Example 9. Slide the stick cylinder to one side until it makes contact with the boom and the stick. Measure the total clearance between the stick cylinder and the boom and the stick cylinder and stick at each pin bore. The total clearance of (a) and (b) must not be more than 1.0 mm (.04 in) at each pin bore. If the total clearance is less than 1.0 mm (.04 in), the addition of shims between the stick cylinder and boom or the stick cylinder and stick will not be required. If the total clearance is more than 1.0 mm (.04 in), add the correct thickness of shims to obtain the necessary clearance. 10. If it has been determined that shims need to be installed between the stick cylinder and boom and the stick cylinder and stick, remove pin assemblies (2) and (5). Install the shims between the stick cylinder and boom and the stick cylinder and stick on the side opposite the pin assembly retaining bolts; then reinstall the spacers and pin assemblies (2) and (5). Install pin assembly retaining bolts (1) and (6) that hold the pin assemblies in position. Tighten bolts (1) and (6) to a torque of 325 ± 40 N·m (240 ± 30 lb ft). 11. Check the condition of the O-ring seals in tube assemblies (4). If the seals are damaged, use new parts for replacement. Connect tube assemblies (4) to the stick cylinder. Connect lubrication line (7) to the stick cylinder. 12. Fill the hydraulic oil tank with oil to the correct level. Lubricate the support pins for the stick cylinder. Refer to the Operation & Maintenance Manual for the correct procedure. 13. Start the machine, and run it at low idle speed. Move the control lever for the stick cylinder so the cylinder rod extends to its halfway position; then retract the cylinder rod. The cylinder should be cycled this way approximately ten times to remove the air from the hydraulic system. Recheck the oil level in the hydraulic oil tank.
