Alignment marks for timing gears
1. Check the alignment of the timing gears.
Note: Ensure that the marks on the timing gears are in alignment. Align the "3" mark on the
fuel injection pump drive gear with the "33" mark on the idler gear. Make an alignment of
the "2" mark on the idler gear with the "22" mark on the camshaft gear. Align the "1" mark
on the crankshaft gear with the "11" mark on the idler gear. The No. 1 cylinder is at the top
center position when the timing marks are in alignment.

NOTICE
Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during
performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair
of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers
before opening any compartment or disassembling any component
containing fluids.
Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Dealer Service
Tool Catalog" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain
fluids on Caterpillar products.
Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.
