Diesel Particulate Filter - Disassemble
SMCS - 108F-015
Disassembly Procedure
Wear goggles, gloves, protective clothing, and a National Institute for
Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) approved P95 or N95 half-
face respirator when handling a used Diesel Particulate Filter or
Catalytic Converter Muffler. Failure to do so could result in personal
injury.
NOTICE
Do not strike any part of the assembly of the Diesel Particulate Filter
(DPF). Do not allow any object to contact the internal element of the
DPF. If the internal element of the DPF becomes damaged, the
assembly must be replaced.
1. Mark the position of components for installation purposes.

2. Remove temperature sensor (1) from body assembly (8). Remove tube assemblies (4) and
pressure sensor (5).
3. Remove bolts (6). Remove body assembly (8) and gasket (12).
4. Remove bolts (7) to separate DPF filter assembly (9) from collar (10). Remove DPF filter
assembly (9).
5. Remove temperature sensor (2) from collar (10). Remove collar (10) and gasket (12).
6. Remove temperature sensor (3) from catalyst assembly (11). Remove catalyst assembly (11)
and gasket (12).
7. Clean the Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF). Refer to Special Instruction, REHS7788,
"Cleaning the Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) on C3.3B and C3.8 Engines".

face respirator when handling a used Diesel Particulate Filter or
Catalytic Converter Muffler. Failure to do so could result in personal
injury.
NOTICE
Do not strike any part of the assembly of the Diesel Particulate Filter
(DPF). Do not allow any object to contact the internal element of the
DPF. If the internal element of the DPF becomes damaged, the
assembly must be replaced.

Note: After cleaning filter assembly or installing a new filter assembly, the Ash Service must be
performed. Refer to Troubleshooting, UENR3423, "Cat ET Service Features - DPF Soot Load
Reset".
Note: When installing a new DOC or DPF, Caterpillar recommends documenting the new
component serial numbers on-line. Go to SIS Web and select "View More" under Additional
Service Information. Select the "C3.3B and C3.8 Downloads" link. The new DOC or DPF serial
numbers can be entered through the "C3.3B and C3.8 DPF / DOC Service Info Registration".

1. Apply Tooling (A) onto the threads of temperature sensor (3). Install gasket (12) and
temperature sensor (3) onto catalyst assembly (11). Tighten temperature sensor (3) to a
torque of 30 ± 5 N·m (22 ± 3 lb ft).
2. Apply Tooling (A) onto the threads of temperature sensor (2). Install collar (10), gasket
(12), and temperature sensor (2) onto catalyst assembly (11). Tighten temperature sensor (2)
to a torque of 30 ± 5 N·m (22 ± 3 lb ft)
3. Install DPF filter assembly (9) in the correct orientation for the exhaust flow as indicated by
the arrow. Install bolts (7). Install gasket (12). Tighten bolts (7) to a torque of 49 to 64 N·m
(36 to 47 lb ft).
4. Install body assembly (8). Install bolts (6). Tighten bolts (6) to a torque of 49 to 64 N·m
(36 to 47 lb ft).
5. Apply Tooling (A) onto the threads of tube assemblies (4) and temperature sensor (1).
Install temperature sensor (1) onto body assembly (8). Install tube assemblies (4) and
pressure sensor (5). Tighten temperature sensor (1) to a torque of 30 ± 5 N·m (22 ± 3 lb ft).
Tighten tube assemblies (4) to a torque of 19 ± 3 N·m (168 ± 27 lb in).

Diesel Particulate Filter - Remove and Install
SMCS - 108F-010
Removal Procedure
Wear goggles, gloves, protective clothing, and a National Institute for
Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) approved P95 or N95 half-
face respirator when handling a used Diesel Particulate Filter or
Catalytic Converter Muffler. Failure to do so could result in personal
injury.
The muffler, catalytic converter/muffler, and diesel particulate filter will
become extremely hot during engine operation. A hot muffler, catalytic
converter/muffler and diesel particulate filter can cause serious burns.
Allow adequate cooling time before working on or near the muffler,
catalytic converter/muffler and diesel particulate filter.
NOTICE
Do not strike any part of the assembly of the Diesel Particulate Filter
(DPF). Do not allow any object to contact the internal element of the

2. Remove bolts (2) and bolts (3). Disconnect harness assembly (4) from pressure sensor.

3. Remove bolts (5) from DPF mount bracket.

4. Use two people to remove diesel particulate filter (6).

5. Remove temperature sensors (7). Remove pressure sensor (8) and tube assemblies (9).
Installation Procedure
1. Install diesel particulate filter (6) in the reverse order of removal.
a. Tighten bolts (5) to a torque of 52 ± 3 N·m (38 ± 2 lb ft).
b. Tighten sensors (7) to a torque of 30 ± 4 N·m (22 ± 3 lb ft).
c. Tighten tube assemblies (9) to a torque of 19 ± 3 N·m (168 ± 27 lb in).

Inlet Manifold - Remove and Install

Removal Procedure
Start By:
a. Remove fuel manifold.
b. Remove exhaust gas recirculation valve.
Note: Refer to Specification UENR3421 "Engine Design" for non-specified engine Torque
Values.

2. Remove bolt (2) and remove tube assembly (3).
3. Remove bolts (4) to remove inlet manifold (5) and the gasket.

Start By:
a. Remove the rocker shaft and push rod.
Note: Refer to Specification UENR3421 "Engine Design" for non-specified engine Torque
Values.
Note: The following procedure should be adopted in order to remove the valve springs when the
cylinder head is installed to the engine. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Inlet and Exhaust
Valves - Remove and Install" for the procedure to remove the valve springs from a cylinder head
that has been removed from the engine.
Note: Ensure that the appropriate piston is at top dead center before the valve spring is removed.
Failure to ensure that the piston is at top dead center may allow the valve to drop into the cylinder
bore.

Personal injury can result from being struck by parts propelled by a
released spring force.
Make sure to wear all necessary protective equipment.
Follow the recommended procedure and use all recommended tooling to
release the spring force.
NOTICE
Ensure that the valve spring is compressed squarely or damage to the
valve stem may occur.

1. Follow Step 1.a through Step 1.d in order to position the appropriate piston at top dead
center.
a. Install Tooling (A) in position on the cylinder head in order to compress a valve
spring (4) for the appropriate piston.
b. Use Tooling (A) in order to compress valve spring (4) and open the valve slightly.
Note: Do not compress the spring so that valve spring retainer (3) touches the valve
stem seal.
c. Rotate the crankshaft carefully, until the piston touches the valve.
Note: Do not use excessive force to turn the crankshaft. The use of force can result in
bent valve stems.
d. Continue to rotate the crankshaft and gradually release the pressure on Tooling (A)
until the piston is at the top dead center position. The valve is now held in a position
that allows the valve spring to be safely removed.
Note: If all valve springs require replacement, the procedure can be carried out on two
cylinders at the same time. The procedure can be carried out on the following pairs of
cylinders. 1 with 4 and 2 with 3. Ensure that all of the valve springs are installed before
changing from one pair of cylinders to another pair of cylinders.
NOTICE
Do not turn the crankshaft while the valve springs are removed.
2. Remove valve cap (1). Apply sufficient pressure to Tooling (A) in order to allow removal of
valve keepers (2).
Note: Do not compress the spring so that valve spring retainer (3) touches the valve stem
seal.
3. Slowly release pressure on Tooling (A).
4. Remove valve spring retainer (3) and remove valve spring (4).

5. Remove Tooling (A).
6. Remove valve stem seals (5).
7. Repeat Step 2 through Step 5 in order to remove the remaining valve springs from the
appropriate cylinder.
Installation Procedure
1. Install the inlet and exhaust valve springs in the reverse order of removal.

a. Install valve springs with the smaller pitch end (6) downward on cylinder head side.
b. Inspect valve springs (4) for damage and for the correct length. Refer to
Specifications, "Cylinder Head Valves " for further information.

Inlet and Exhaust Valves - Remove and Install

A 5S-1330 Valve Spring Compressor 1
Start By:
a. Remove cylinder head.
Note: Refer to Specification UENR3421 "Engine Design" for non-specified engine Torque
Values.
1. Clean the bottom mating surface of the cylinder head. Check the depth of the valves below
the face of the cylinder head before the valve springs are removed. Refer to Specifications,
"Cylinder Head Valves" for the correct dimensions.
2. Place a temporary identification mark on the heads of the valves in order to identify the
correct position.
3. Use a suitable lifting device to position the cylinder head with the valve springs upward.
The weight of the cylinder head is approximately 23 kg (51 lb).

5. Apply sufficient pressure to Tooling (A) in order to remove valve keepers (3).
6. Slowly release pressure on Tooling (A).
7. Place a temporary identification mark on valve spring (5) in order to identify the correct
position.
8. Remove valve spring retainer (4). Remove valve spring (5) and inlet and exhaust valves (6).
9. Repeat Step 4 through Step 8 for the remaining valves.
10. Remove Tooling (A).

11. Remove valve stem seals (7) from cylinder head (2).
12. Use a suitable lifting device in order to turn over cylinder head (2).
13. Remove the inlet and exhaust valves.
Installation Procedure
1. Install inlet and exhaust valves (6) in the reverse order of removal.
a. Clean all components of the cylinder head assembly. Ensure that all ports, all coolant
passages, and all lubrication passages in the cylinder head are free from debris.
Replace any components that are worn or damaged.
b. Lubricate the stems of inlet and exhaust valves (6) with clean engine oil. Install inlet
and exhaust valves (6) in the appropriate positions in the cylinder head. Check the
depth of the valves below the face of the cylinder head. Refer to System Operation,
Testing and Adjusting, "Valve Depth - Inspect" for more information.

Install collar (10), gasket (12), and temperature sensor (2) onto catalyst assembly (11). Tighten temperature sensor (2) to a torque of 30 ± 5 N·m (22 ± 3 lb ft) 3. Install DPF filter assembly (9) in the correct orientation for the exhaust flow as indicated by the arrow. Install bolts (7). Install gasket (12). Tighten bolts (7) to a torque of 49 to 64 N·m (36 to 47 lb ft). 4. Install body assembly (8). Install bolts (6). Tighten bolts (6) to a torque of 49 to 64 N·m (36 to 47 lb ft). 5. Apply Tooling (A) onto the threads of tube assemblies (4) and temperature sensor (1). Install temperature sensor (1) onto body assembly (8). Install tube assemblies (4) and pressure sensor (5). Note: Ensure that the appropriate piston is at top dead center before the valve spring is removed.   • 14. 1. Follow Step 1.a through Step 1.d in order to position the appropriate piston at top dead center. a. Install Tooling (A) in position on the cylinder head in order to compress a valve spring (4) for the appropriate piston. b. Use Tooling (A) in order to compress valve spring (4) and open the valve slightly. Note: Do not compress the spring so that valve spring retainer (3) touches the valve stem seal. c. Rotate the crankshaft carefully, until the piston touches the valve. Note: Do not use excessive force to turn the crankshaft. The use of force can result in bent valve stems. d. Continue to rotate the crankshaft and gradually release the pressure on Tooling (A) until the piston is at the top dead center position. The valve is now held in a position that allows the valve spring to be safely removed. Note: If all valve springs require replacement, the procedure can be carried out on two cylinders at the same time. The procedure can be carried out on the following pairs of cylinders. 1 with 4 and 2 with 3. Ensure that all of the valve springs are installed before changing from one pair of cylinders to another pair of cylinders. NOTICE Do not turn the crankshaft while the valve springs are removed. 2. Remove valve cap (1). Apply sufficient pressure to Tooling (A) in order to allow removal of valve keepers (2). Note: Do not compress the spring so that valve spring retainer (3) touches the valve stem seal. 3. Slowly release pressure on Tooling (A). 4. Check the depth of the valves below the face of the cylinder head before the valve springs are removed. Refer to Specifications, "Cylinder Head Valves" for the correct dimensions. 2. Place a temporary identification mark on the heads of the valves in order to identify the correct position. 3. Use a suitable lifting device to position the cylinder head with the valve springs upward. Follow the recommended procedure and use all recommended tooling to release the spring force.   • 19. 5. Apply sufficient pressure to Tooling (A) in order to remove valve keepers (3). 6. Slowly release pressure on Tooling (A). 7. Place a temporary identification mark on valve spring (5) in order to identify the correct position. 8. Remove valve spring retainer (4). Remove valve spring (5) and inlet and exhaust valves (6). 9. Repeat Step 4 through Step 8 for the remaining valves. 10. Remove Tooling (A). Illustration 3 g02784644 11. Remove valve stem seals (7) from cylinder head (2). 12. Use a suitable lifting device in order to turn over cylinder head (2). 13. Remove the inlet and exhaust valves. Installation Procedure 1. Install inlet and exhaust valves (6) in the reverse order of removal. a. Clean all components of the cylinder head assembly. Ensure that all ports, all coolant passages, and all lubrication passages in the cylinder head are free from debris. Replace any components that are worn or damaged. b. Lubricate the stems of inlet and exhaust valves (6) with clean engine oil. Install inlet and exhaust valves (6) in the appropriate positions in the cylinder head.
