NOTICE
Do not damage the flange on the crankshaft when the crankshaft oil
seal is removed or installed. Damage to the crankshaft can result if the
proper tool is not used.
1. Use Tool (A) to carefully drill three evenly spaced holes in crankshaft rear seal (1) .
2. Insert Tool (B) into one of the three holes in order to remove crankshaft rear seal (1) .
3. Remove crankshaft rear seal (1) by carefully alternating the position of Tool (B) from hole
to hole. This will allow the crankshaft rear seal to be removed evenly without damage to the
rear flange surface of the crankshaft.

2. Attach Tool (A) and a suitable lifting device to flywheel housing (2) .
3. Put flywheel housing (2) in position on the cylinder block. The dowels in the cylinder block
must be aligned with the dowel holes in the flywheel housing.
4. Install bolts (1) and tighten the bolts evenly to a torque of 78 N·m (58 lb ft).
5. Remove the lifting device and Tool (A) from the engine.
End By: Install the flywheel. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Flywheel - Install".

NOTICE
Keep all parts clean from contaminants.
Contaminants may cause rapid wear and shortened component life.
1. Loosen the bolts for the alternator and slide the alternator toward the engine in order to
remove the V-belt from the engine.

1. Thoroughly clean the following components: keyway, key, bore of the crankshaft pulley,
end of the crankshaft and washer.

2. Put crankshaft pulley (3) in position on the engine.
3. Inject a 3 mm (0.12 inch) bead of 8T-9022 Silicone Gasket into the crevice between the
crankshaft and the crankshaft pulley. Please refer to illustration 3.

4. Lubricate bolt (1) with clean engine oil.
5. Install washer (2) and bolt (1) in the crankshaft. Tighten bolt (1) to a torque of 185 N·m
(136 lb ft).
6. Put the V-belt in position on the engine.
7. Slide the alternator away from the engine in order to tension the alternator V-belt. Tighten
the bolts for the alternator. For more information on the tension for the alternator V-belt,
refer to the Testing and Adjusting Module, "Belt Tension Chart".

Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Tools and Shop
Products Guide" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain
fluids on Caterpillar products.
Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.

1. Use Tool (A) to carefully drill three evenly spaced holes in crankshaft front seal (1) .
2. Insert Tool (B) into one of the three holes in order to remove crankshaft front seal (1) .
NOTICE
Ensure that the main lip is used in order to remove the crankshaft
front seal. Do not damage the edge of the housing for the crankshaft
front seal.
3. Remove crankshaft front seal (1) carefully by alternating the position of Tool (B) from hole
to hole. This will allow the crankshaft front seal to be removed evenly without damage to
the flange surface of the crankshaft.
