Start By:
a. Remove the circle drive. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Circle Drive - Remove".
Note: Cleanliness is an important factor. Before you begin the disassembly procedure, the exterior
of the components should be thoroughly cleaned. This will help to prevent dirt from entering the
internal mechanism. Precision components can be damaged by contaminants or by dirt. Perform
disassembly procedures on a clean work surface. Keep components covered and protected at all
times.

1. Remove coupling (1) from housing (3). Remove pin (2) from coupling (1).
2. Remove nuts (4). Remove bracket (5).

3. Remove O-ring seal (7) and shims (8).
4. Remove bearing cup (6) from bracket (5).
5. Remove bolts (9) and cover (10).
6. Remove bolts (11).

7. Install Tooling (A) and remove cover (12).
8. Remove plug (13) and O-ring seal (14) from cover (12).
9. Remove bearing (15) from cover (12).

10. Install Tooling (B) on shaft assembly (16). Attach a suitable lifting device to Tooling (B).
The weight of shaft assembly (16) is approximately 32 kg (70 lb).
11. Remove shaft assembly (16). Remove Tooling (B).

12. Remove remaining bolts (17) and retainer (18). Remove spacer (19) and shims (20).
13. Remove spring (21) and spacer (22).

14. Remove gear (23) from shaft assembly (16). Remove friction discs (24) and discs (25) from
gear (23). Remove spacer (26).

15. Remove thrust washer (27) and remove bearing (28).
16. Remove worm assembly (29) from housing (3).
17. Use Tooling (C) and a suitable press in order to remove bearings (31) from worm assembly
(29).

18. Use Tooling (D) in order to remove bearing cup (32) from housing (3).

Note: Check the O-ring seals, the gaskets, and the seals for wear or for damage. Replace the
components, if necessary.

1. Lower the temperature of bearing cup (32). Install bearing cup (32) in housing (3). Lower
the temperature of bearing (28). Install bearing (28) to a depth of 2.00 ± 0.50 mm
(0.079 ± 0.020 inch) below the face.
2. Raise the temperature of bearing cones (31). Install bearing cones (31) on worm assembly
(29).

3. Install worm assembly (29) in housing (3).
4. Lower the temperature on bearing cup (6). Install bearing cup (6) in bracket (5).
5. Torque nut (4A) to 20 N·m (15 lb ft) and nut (4B) 40 N·m (30 lb ft). Then Torque nut (4A)
to 80 N·m (60 lb ft) and nut (4B) 80 N·m (60 lb ft). Rotate the worm 3 revolutions then
back off the nuts.
6. Torque nut (4A) to 20 N·m (15 lb ft) and nut (4B) 40 N·m (30 lb ft) then torque nut (4A) to
40 N·m (30 lb ft) rotate the worm 3 revolutions.
7. Torque nut (4A) to 40 N·m (30 lb ft) and nut (4B) 40 N·m (30 lb ft). Measure the average
gap between the housing and adapter at the locations being torqued. Subtract
0.145 ± 0.065 mm (0.006 ± 0.003 inch) to obtain the desire shim pack thickness.

8. Remove nuts (4) and bracket (5).

9. Install gear (23) on shaft assembly (16). Install spacer (26). Install friction discs (24) and
discs (25) in gear (23).

10. Install spacer (22), spring (21), and spacer (19).
11. Install Tooling (B) (not shown) and bolts (17). Attach a suitable lifting device to Tooling
(B). The weight of shaft assembly (16) is approximately 32 kg (70 lb).

12. Install thrust washer (27).
Note: If bolts (17) are M16 bolts, follow Step 13 through Step 19 for the correct shimming
procedure.

13. Install shaft assembly (16). Remove Tooling (B). Tighten bolts (17) to 150 ± 20N·m
(111 ± 15 lb ft).
14. Wait 45 minutes, then remove bolts (17) and retainer (18) to add shims (20)
15. Determine the required number of shims (20) to obtain 2.30 ± 0.25 mm (0.10 ± 0.01 inch) of
deflection in spring (21). Use a depth micrometer to obtain the distance from the end of
shaft assembly (16) to the flat surface on spacer (19).
16. Subtract 2.30 ± 0.25 mm (0.10 ± 0.01 inch) from the dimension that was measured in Step
15. The calculated dimension is the thickness of shims (20).
17. Install shims (20), retainer (18), and bolts (17).
18. Tighten bolts (17) to a torque of 240 ± 40 N·m (177 ± 30 lb ft).
19. Tighten bolts (17) again to a torque of 240 ± 40 N·m (177 ± 30 lb ft).
Note: If bolts (17) are 1/2-13 thd bolts, follow Step 20 through Step 26 for the correct
shimming procedure.
20. Install shaft assembly (16). Remove Tooling (B). Tighten bolts (17) to 130 ± 7 N·m
(96 ± 5 lb ft).
21. Wait 45 minutes, then remove bolts (17) and retainer (18) to add shims (20)
22. Determine the required number of shims (20) to obtain 2.30 ± 0.25 mm (0.10 ± 0.01 inch) of
deflection in spring (21). Use a depth micrometer to obtain the distance from the end of
shaft assembly (16) to the flat surface on spacer (19).
23. Subtract 2.30 ± 0.25 mm (0.10 ± 0.01 inch) from the dimension that was measured in Step
15. The calculated dimension is the thickness of shims (20).
24. Install shims (20), retainer (18), and bolts (17).
25. Tighten bolts (17) to a torque of 130 ± 7 N·m (96 ± 5 lb ft).
26. Tighten bolts (17) again to a torque of 130 ± 7 N·m (96 ± 5 lb ft).

27. Lower the temperature of bearing (15). Install bearing (15) even with the bottom face of
cover (12).
28. Install O-ring seal (14) on cover (12). Lubricate the O-ring seal with the lubricant that is
being sealed. Install plug (13).
29. Install cover (12).

30. Install five bolts (11). Apply Tooling (F) to new bolts (11A). Install new bolts (11A), as
shown.
31. Install cover (10) and bolts (9).
