Dear fellow travellers
For all of us at Icelandic Mountain Guides, nature comes first. Decades of personal experience, of
playing with the elements, have left us comfortable and committed to the environment and the
possibilities for a fun day outside. Whether we are exploring the icescapes of glaciers, crossing the
impressive highlands, trekking in the extraordinary rhyolite massifs or enjoying a hike in the valleys our
aim is to Make Every Moment an Experience
           Quality
Icelandic Mountain Guides have been operating since 1994. In January 2008 we merged with our fellow
company Iceland Rovers (partly owned by the same pioneer people as IMG) and the Icelandic Travel Market
(Tourist Information Center in the heart of Reykjavík). The goal, to serve you, our customer, even better than
before and to bring our professionalism to yet another level. We are working harder than ever on the quality
of our tours and continuously improving the skill and training of our guides to assure that all our clients
have a safe and pleasant journey whatever the activity is and whatever the level is, easy to very difficult.
           Professionalism
We pride ourselves in having a highly qualified team of both guides and travel organizers. Most of our
guides come from the mountain rescue background and all are passionate nature lovers and travellers.
Our guides have a record that includes an incredible number of expeditions and impressive journeys,
should it be of high altitude summits or long winter tours in the high Arctic. Many have taken the tourist
guide and hiking/trekking guide (Mountain Leader Awards) of the Icelandic tour guide school.
For all glacier activity we have now introduced the New Zealand glacier guide standard and we already pride
ourselves of 3 Alpine Trekking Guides, 8 Level 2 Hard Ice Guides and 11 Level 1 Hard Ice Guides. Our guides
in general carry the Wilderness First Responder diploma in first aid (8 days intensive course), Avalanche level 1
or level 2 courses and various other courses that aim for better performance and increased security. Therefore
we can offer guides that are fit to take on the various tasks our trips demand.
           Environment
Icelandic Mountain Guides have a deep respect for nature. We aim for sustainable tourism and to leave
no trace apart from our footprints when we travel. To minimize our use of fossil fuels we have chosen to
use regular buses for most transfers and fuel efficient minibuses where other means are not offered. As
for our Super Jeep tours we have for the same reason, primarily chosen Land Rover Defenders because
they are strong and reliable at the same time as their fuel consumption per passenger seat is the lowest
possible for this kind of travel. In Iceland we support local NGOs and take an active part in discussion
about development of wilderness and open spaces where we as a rule take natures side against ideas of
heavy industry or new highway projects in unspoiled areas.
Whether you are a novice hiker or a qualified mountaineer, our experienced guides will ensure that
you take delight in Iceland’s unspoiled wilderness safely and carefully, leaving you with unforgettable
memories of astonishing landscapes and lasting experiences. And our philosophy has allowed us to
become recognized as Iceland’s premier mountaineering and hiking company.
Come experience the wonders of Iceland with us

    Ice Climbing
4 Here we have a three hour ice-climbing tour for almost any level, whether you are a complete
5 beginner at this interesting sport or a veteran aficionado of ice climbing. The Svínafellsjökull
glacier is the ideal playground as it has ice walls of various shapes and heights. As a result it is an
excellent location for either an introduction to the sport or to improve technical proficiency. The
spectacular scenery of the surrounding peaks can be enjoyed from a different angle on this tour!
Meeting point: ITM/Icelandic Mountain Guides Sales Office (next to the National Park
    Visitor Center).
Included: Guiding services, glacier- and climbing gear, and safety equipment.
Note: Bring warm clothing, rain gear and hiking boots.
    Minimum age: 10 years.
    Groups: Min. 2 persons.
Departures: June 1st to August 26th: Every day at 15:00.

    Hvannadalshnúkur: Iceland’s highest summit IMG25
    Level: Demanding.
    Distance: 22 kilometers (14 miles).
1 Height gain: More than 2000 meters (6500 feet).
2 Duration: 12 - 15 hours.
3 A hike on snow and ice: Hvannadalshnúkur Summit
4 The ascent of the highest peak in Iceland, Hvannadalshnúkur (2110 m/6900’) is a once
in a lifetime must for enthusiastic outdoors people. This is an unforgettable climb with
5 breathtaking panoramic views stretching over the rugged outlet glaciers of Vatnajökull
glacier or over the vast sandy plains of the glaciated rivers that drain off that great glacier.
Normally the climb requires no technical/mountaineering skill but at times the conditions
on the summit are such that the climb is no longer a simple straight forward snow slope
and the ascent requires some technical climbing over crevasses. Then some mountaineering
    experience is strongly recommended.
Meeting point: ITM/Icelandic Mountain Guides Sales Office (next to the National Park
    Visitor Center).
Included: Guiding services, glacier gear and safety equipment.
Note: A briefing with a guide takes place the evening before. Bring warm clothing, rain
    gear, hiking boots and food.
    Minimum age: 16 years.
    Groups: Min. 2 persons.
Departures: April 1st to September 30th: Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays, at 05:00 in
the morning, when weather and conditions permit.

Hrútsfjallstindar is the name of the impressive peaks dominating the skyline to the north
of Svínafellsjökull glacier. The peaks are four and the highest one is 1875 m high (6150 ‘).
For many years the peaks have challenged serious climbers and several climbing routes are
already established. However hikers have also made their way up there without technical
difficulties and a trip up to the Hrútsfjallstindar Peaks is on par with a trip to the summit of
Hvannadalshnúkur. The hike is equally demanding and takes about 14 - 16 hours. The route
offers magnificent scenery over the Öræfajökull massif as well as the Skaftafellsjökull and
Svinafellsjökull glaciers. Part of the hike is on a glacier thus the use of glacier equipment is
vital. No special mountaineering skills required but the hike is both physically and mentally
demanding. Note our low client ratio, only 8 clients per guide.

no coincidence that the “Laugavegur” hike each year attracts travellers from around the

Three day vehicle assisted trek from hut to hut
5 Along with the Laugavegur trek, the hike over Fimmvörðuháls is probably the best known
in Iceland. The trail takes us from the nature reserve of Þórsmörk over a mountain pass
that lies between two glaciers, down to the lowlands on the other side. Once there we
are greeted by the great Skógarfoss waterfall and the Atlantic coast is not far away. This

Trek in Iceland’s greatest volcanic region 4
This highly volcanic area has known several eruptions since the settlement of Iceland, 5
the most famous in 1783 along the Laki crater row. In all, 565 km2 of lava flowed in
that eruption, creating the most extensive lava field in the world resulting from a single
eruption. Although catastrophic at the time, the lava field and the 135 craters today form
one of the most scenic landscapes in Iceland. The uniqueness of the contrasting black
sand and moss-covered craters and lava is a sight leaving an unforgettable impression.
In this wilderness just south west of the great Vatnajökull glacier we walk amongst the
volcanic formations of the Eldhraun along rivers and past beautiful lakes that give this
lunar landscape a special aura. This is a lightweight and comfortable trek over rather easy
terrain, even though some parts (like walking in the lava) may require more sustained
effort. Accommodation in comfortable mountain huts.

4 Mountains and fjords of the East
5 Hiking through the magnificent landscapes of the North Eastern inlets is a unique
experience. The mountains come in all shapes and sizes and the variety of colors is
stunning; everything from the black sands of the beaches to the pinkish orange hues of the
mountain ridges. The presence of the ocean sets its mark on this tour. Each day we follow
old trails between these isolated inlets and fjords over colorful hills and through green
valleys to down to sea side to find the hut where we lodge. This combination of mountains
and ocean is what makes this trek a unique one; another advantage is the milder climate
we can be expected at this lower altitude. The area remained populated until the early
seventies and some abandoned houses and vestiges of ancient farmsteads set their mark
on the surroundings, however, sheep may be the only living thing connecting us to those
former times; in addition the possibility of enjoying the sighting of reindeer herds should
not be overlooked. Accommodation in well equipped and very comfortable huts.

Along with the Núpstaðarskógar-Skaftafell tour, this is the Icelandic Mountain Guides great 5
classic. A unique five-day hike from the craters of Laki (erupted 1782 - 83) to the birch
covered valley of Núpsstaðarskógar. On the way we climb the Laki mountain to view the
25 km crater row, visit the Rauðhólar craters, pass two impressive rivers at the front of the
great Síðujökull glacier, enjoy a warm bath in a natural pool in the Valley of Bones and
see series of magnificent waterfalls on our way down to Núpstaðarskógar. Glaciers have
sculpted this landscape and recent lava streams and deep canyons add to the impressive
surroundings. An outstanding Iceland backpacking tour.

4 Six - day backpacking tour - The Desert under the Glacier
5 This third part of the Iceland traverse goes from Askja and follows the great Vatnajökull
south-west through Vonarskarð pass to Nýidalur oasis. The contrast of the black volcanic
desert and the glacier that dominates the area to the east, the desolation and hostility of
the environment render this landscape strangely lunar but beautiful at the same time.

4 Seven - day backpack tour - Lava of Trolls and Lakes of Elves
5 One of the biggest challenges for hikers in Iceland is the traverse south along the western
part of the enormous Vatnajökull glacier. Leaving from the Nýidalur valley in central
Iceland, this trail traverses through sandy plains, rough lava, cliffs and partly on a glacier.
Additionally, there are numerous rivers to cross, some of them quite impressive, requiring
special wading techniques. This is also among the most isolated parts of the country,
difficult to access and requiring fairly precise planning. Due to the elevation of this tour,
weather can be unpredictable but the nature is unforgettable. And that is certainly why the
magic of this traverse is so irresistible.
Departure dates: Included in price: Guide for 7 days, food for 7 days (from lunch
15.07 - 21.07.2010 day 1 to lunch day 7), cooking gear, tents, hut fee, camping fee

The tuff (compacted volcanic ash) mountains around the Mýrdalsjökull glacier are one of 5
the striking features of Iceland. This soft volcanic rock is easily eroded by wind and water,
often being sculpted like clay. The tuff retains humidity quite well and as these mountains
are exposed to the damp air of the Atlantic Ocean they are thus generously covered by
lush, green vegetation. All this creates an area of spectacular contrasts with one of the
larger glaciers in Iceland, the Mýrdalsjökull glacier, where one of the most active volcanoes,
Katla lies hidden under the icecap. This hike follows the eastern edge of Mýrdalsjökull
glacier, crossing glacier tongues towards the bird-rich sea cliffs around the village of Vík on
                     the south shore of Iceland.

Five - day backpack tour in the Lónsöræfi Nature Reserve
Lónsöræfi is one of the most remote hiking areas in Iceland and offers the unique experience 5
of the rugged landscapes to the east of the Vatnajökull glacier, Europe’s largest. The glacier
has clearly left its mark on everything here whether it is a moraine, a lagoon or a riverbed.
The abundance of colors characteristic of the rhyolitic rocks are quite a contrast to the
basaltic formations, offering a real feast for eyes and minds. Reindeer roam freely in this
remote ruggedness and are vary of humans. Here we walk through an unbelievable variety
of landscapes; deep canyons, green valleys, incredible cliffs and snow-clad peaks that stand
against the sky. Well equipped mountain huts guarantee the comfort of this tour. Icelandic
Mountain Guides provides sleeping bags or blankets in the huts that should limit the weight
each person has to carry to 7 to 10 kg (15 to 20 lbs) which makes this more of a trekking
than a backpacking trip. An extraordinarily beautiful trek in a fantastic area.

Seven - day alpine touring (or telemark) skiing tour
Just below the Arctic circle lies Iceland’s longest fjord, Eyjafjörður, home of the capital of 5
northern Iceland, Akureyri. Surrounded by numerous summits ranging from 1200 to 1500
m (4000 - 4900 ’), Eyjafjörður offers a great number of interesting descents and is an ideal
location for a scenic tour. The high northern location of these mountains will assure a good
quantity of snow and the view over the neighbouring mountains and down to the deep
blue fjord is both magnificent and surreal. In late afternoon local swimming pools, that
sometimes look more like a spa (heated with the geothermal hot water), offer a welcoming
relaxation. Lodging in sleeping bag accommodation.

Nine-day cross country ski tour with pulka/sledge
This tour is actually a small expedition; the crossing of Europe’s largest glacier, Vatnajölull 5
during the bright spring days. Covering the high plateau in the region with ice, the giant
glacier hides a number of active volcanoes. The main goal of this adventure is to reach one
of these, the famous volcano of Grímsvötn at the heart of this massive ice field. Thereafter,
the course is set towards Öræfajökull volcano, with the intent of reaching the highest point
in Iceland. The climb up to the peak, Hvannadalshnúkur (2110 m), surely marks the highlight
of our journey. From there we have a long descent down the glacial tongue to the south side
of the glacier. On this glacier traverse the conditions can sometimes be comparable to those
of the arctic, even in spring we can be assured to find ourselves in demanding circumstances.
                     Accommodation in tents and huts.

5 10 - day cross - country ski tour with pulka/sledge
A beautiful traverse on cross country skis over the Icelandic highlands, from high grounds
above from Akureyri in the North, over the deserted Sprengisandur - the ancient route
between the Hofsjökull and Vatnajökull glaciers - to Landmannalaugar an area of high
geothermal activity. This is a winter tour to the center of Iceland, an area that in winter
is not easily accessible. Our reward is an incredible combination of wide open spaces
and impressive mountainous landscape and geothermal activity; here snow, ice, fire and
water come together to create an enchanting winter world. The snow covered vastness,
unpredictable winter weather conditions, and the isolation make this tour a personal
challenge for the participants. Accommodation in tents and huts.

4 6 - day cross-country ski tour in Landmannalaugar
5 Situated at the edge of the Arctic Circle, Iceland has no reason to be jealous of continental
Scandinavia when it comes to Cross country skiing. Here nature offers striking contrasts and
incredibly diverse volcanic landscapes: craters, lava fields and snow filled gorges and canyons
where thick steam curls burst out of the entrails of Earth. Travelling through these magnificent
surroundings in the summertime is already an experience of continuous wonder. In winter, it
is an extraordinary adventure open to only a few. Landmannalaugar, the base camp for this
circuit, is known to summer guests for colorful landscapes and amazing geothermal activity
(the world’s third biggest source of geothermal hot springs); in winter the region regains its
calm and serenity. This landscape of ravines and canyons becomes even more memorable
when steam clouds rise from the snow-clad hills. And add the pleasure of nice warm bath
under the evening sky in a hot spring after a good solid day of skiing!
    Departure dates: 20.02 - 25.02.2010, 20.03 - 25.03.2010 and 05.04 - 10.04.2010

Iceland Tour & Travel Guide

  • 2. Dear fellow travellers For all of us at Icelandic Mountain Guides, nature comes first. Decades of personal experience, of playing with the elements, have left us comfortable and committed to the environment and the possibilities for a fun day outside. Whether we are exploring the icescapes of glaciers, crossing the impressive highlands, trekking in the extraordinary rhyolite massifs or enjoying a hike in the valleys our aim is to Make Every Moment an Experience Quality Icelandic Mountain Guides have been operating since 1994. In January 2008 we merged with our fellow company Iceland Rovers (partly owned by the same pioneer people as IMG) and the Icelandic Travel Market (Tourist Information Center in the heart of Reykjavík). The goal, to serve you, our customer, even better than before and to bring our professionalism to yet another level. We are working harder than ever on the quality of our tours and continuously improving the skill and training of our guides to assure that all our clients have a safe and pleasant journey whatever the activity is and whatever the level is, easy to very difficult. Professionalism We pride ourselves in having a highly qualified team of both guides and travel organizers. Most of our guides come from the mountain rescue background and all are passionate nature lovers and travellers. Our guides have a record that includes an incredible number of expeditions and impressive journeys, should it be of high altitude summits or long winter tours in the high Arctic. Many have taken the tourist guide and hiking/trekking guide (Mountain Leader Awards) of the Icelandic tour guide school. For all glacier activity we have now introduced the New Zealand glacier guide standard and we already pride ourselves of 3 Alpine Trekking Guides, 8 Level 2 Hard Ice Guides and 11 Level 1 Hard Ice Guides. Our guides in general carry the Wilderness First Responder diploma in first aid (8 days intensive course), Avalanche level 1 or level 2 courses and various other courses that aim for better performance and increased security. Therefore we can offer guides that are fit to take on the various tasks our trips demand. Environment Icelandic Mountain Guides have a deep respect for nature. We aim for sustainable tourism and to leave no trace apart from our footprints when we travel. To minimize our use of fossil fuels we have chosen to use regular buses for most transfers and fuel efficient minibuses where other means are not offered. As for our Super Jeep tours we have for the same reason, primarily chosen Land Rover Defenders because they are strong and reliable at the same time as their fuel consumption per passenger seat is the lowest possible for this kind of travel. In Iceland we support local NGOs and take an active part in discussion about development of wilderness and open spaces where we as a rule take natures side against ideas of heavy industry or new highway projects in unspoiled areas. Whether you are a novice hiker or a qualified mountaineer, our experienced guides will ensure that you take delight in Iceland’s unspoiled wilderness safely and carefully, leaving you with unforgettable memories of astonishing landscapes and lasting experiences. And our philosophy has allowed us to become recognized as Iceland’s premier mountaineering and hiking company. Come experience the wonders of Iceland with us www.mountainguides.is mountainguide@mountainguide.is Tel: +354 587 9999 2 www.mountainguides.is

Hrútsfjallstindar Peaks IMG27 1 Level: Demanding 2 Distance: 22 kilometers (14 miles) Elevation: 1800 meters (6500 feet) 3 Duration: 14 - 16 hours 4 Hrútsfjallstindar Peaks 1875 m 5 Hrútsfjallstindar is the name of the impressive peaks dominating the skyline to the north of Svínafellsjökull glacier. The peaks are four and the highest one is 1875 m high (6150 ‘). For many years the peaks have challenged serious climbers and several climbing routes are already established. However hikers have also made their way up there without technical difficulties and a trip up to the Hrútsfjallstindar Peaks is on par with a trip to the summit of Hvannadalshnúkur. The hike is equally demanding and takes about 14 - 16 hours. The route offers magnificent scenery over the Öræfajökull massif as well as the Skaftafellsjökull and Svinafellsjökull glaciers. Part of the hike is on a glacier thus the use of glacier equipment is vital. No special mountaineering skills required but the hike is both physically and mentally demanding. Note our low client ratio, only 8 clients per guide. Meeting point: ITM/Icelandic Mountain Guides Sales Office (next to National Park Visitor Center) Includes: Guiding services, ice gear and safety equipment. In all, 565 km2 of lava flowed in that eruption, creating the most extensive lava field in the world resulting from a single eruption. Although catastrophic at the time, the lava field and the 135 craters today form one of the most scenic landscapes in Iceland. The uniqueness of the contrasting black sand and moss-covered craters and lava is a sight leaving an unforgettable impression. In this wilderness just south west of the great Vatnajökull glacier we walk amongst the volcanic formations of the Eldhraun along rivers and past beautiful lakes that give this lunar landscape a special aura. • 15. 1 Hiking at the end of the world IMG34 Level: Challenging. Total distance: 65 kilometers (40 miles) 2 Trekking: 5 days. Altitude: 20 - 800 meters (65 - 2625 feet) 3 Walking per day: 5 - 8 hours. Maximum ascent: 600 m (1970 feet) 4 Mountains and fjords of the East 5 Hiking through the magnificent landscapes of the North Eastern inlets is a unique experience. The mountains come in all shapes and sizes and the variety of colors is stunning; everything from the black sands of the beaches to the pinkish orange hues of the mountain ridges. The presence of the ocean sets its mark on this tour. Each day we follow old trails between these isolated inlets and fjords over colorful hills and through green valleys to down to sea side to find the hut where we lodge. This combination of mountains and ocean is what makes this trek a unique one; another advantage is the milder climate we can be expected at this lower altitude. The area remained populated until the early seventies and some abandoned houses and vestiges of ancient farmsteads set their mark on the surroundings, however, sheep may be the only living thing connecting us to those former times; in addition the possibility of enjoying the sighting of reindeer herds should not be overlooked. Accommodation in well equipped and very comfortable huts. Departure dates: Included in price: Guide for 5 days, domestic flights between 05.07 - 09.07.2010 Reykjavík and Egilsstaðir, transportation in the Eastern Fjords, 12.07 - 16.07.2010 food for 5 days (from lunch day 1 to lunch day 5), sleeping bag accommodation (hostel and mountain huts), cooking gear and 26.07 - 30.07.2010 transfer of luggage. 09.08 - 13.08.2010 Group size: 6 to 16 participants. Additionally, there are numerous rivers to cross, some of them quite impressive, requiring special wading techniques. The tuff retains humidity quite well and as these mountains are exposed to the damp air of the Atlantic Ocean they are thus generously covered by lush, green vegetation. All this creates an area of spectacular contrasts with one of the larger glaciers in Iceland, the Mýrdalsjökull glacier, where one of the most active volcanoes, Katla lies hidden under the icecap. This hike follows the eastern edge of Mýrdalsjökull glacier, crossing glacier tongues towards the bird-rich sea cliffs around the village of Vík on the south shore of Iceland. Departure dates: Included in price: Guide for 5 days, food for 5 days (from 23.07 - 27.07.2010 lunch day 1 to lunch day 5), cooking gear, tents, camping fee and safety equipment for glacier and river crossing. Group size: 4 to 12 participants. Please note: The tour starts at Eldgjá and ends at Vík. The Snæfell to Lónsöræfi Trek IMG49 1 Level: Challenging Total distance: 50 kilometers (33 miles) 2 Backpacking: 5 days Altitude: 100 - 800 meters (330 - 2600 feet) Walking per day: 6 - 8 hours Maximum ascent: 250 meters (820 feet) 3 4 Five - day backpack tour in the Lónsöræfi Nature Reserve Lónsöræfi is one of the most remote hiking areas in Iceland and offers the unique experience 5 of the rugged landscapes to the east of the Vatnajökull glacier, Europe’s largest. The glacier has clearly left its mark on everything here whether it is a moraine, a lagoon or a riverbed. The abundance of colors characteristic of the rhyolitic rocks are quite a contrast to the basaltic formations, offering a real feast for eyes and minds. Reindeer roam freely in this remote ruggedness and are vary of humans. Here we walk through an unbelievable variety of landscapes; deep canyons, green valleys, incredible cliffs and snow-clad peaks that stand against the sky. Well equipped mountain huts guarantee the comfort of this tour. Icelandic Mountain Guides provides sleeping bags or blankets in the huts that should limit the weight each person has to carry to 7 to 10 kg (15 to 20 lbs) which makes this more of a trekking than a backpacking trip. An extraordinarily beautiful trek in a fantastic area. Departure dates: Included in price: Guide for 5 days, domestic flights between 05.07 - 09.07.2010 Reykjavík and Egilsstaðir and Hofn and Reykjavík, transportation to Eyjabakkar area, food for 5 days (from lunch day 1 to lunch 19.07 - 23.07.2010 day 5), mountain huts, sleeping bags, mattresses, cooking gear 26.07 - 30.07.2010 and transportation from Smiðjunes to Höfn. 02.08 - 06.08.2010 Group size: 4 to 14 participants. 16.08 - 20.08.2010 Please note that participants are picked up at accommodation in Reykjavík before the tour starts, and the tour ends at the domestic airport in Reykjavik. Travelling through these magnificent surroundings in the summertime is already an experience of continuous wonder. In winter, it is an extraordinary adventure open to only a few. Landmannalaugar, the base camp for this circuit, is known to summer guests for colorful landscapes and amazing geothermal activity (the world’s third biggest source of geothermal hot springs); in winter the region regains its calm and serenity.
