Recordings of students' conversations show insertion of both vowels and consonants. The insertions occur for several reasons, including influence from the students' native Fante and Twi languages, which have different phonotactic rules than English. Vowels are often added to conform to the syllable structure and phonotactics of Fante and Twi. Consonants are inserted to break up unfamiliar consonant clusters in English words.
