3. Facts
On the night of the November 24, 2007, an armed group of people
broke into the room of the hotel “Assa”.Oleg Orlov(member of the board
of the HRC “Memorial”)was staying during his business trip to
Ingushetia. They put a plastic bag over his head and pushed him out on
the street.
As he found out later, exactly the same happened to the correspondent,
the operator and the operator's assistant, members of a Ren-TV
production team who were staying in another room of the same hotel.
They were working on a report about the protests against the actions of
the siloviks in Nazran’.
Orlov and the TV crew were pushed into a car and driven to a
desolated area outside the town. They were pushed on the ground. The
abductors threatened that they were going to shoot them. After having
beaten them and left them in the middle of an empty field and
disappeared.

4.  Orlov and the “Ren-TV” employees managed to remove the bags.
Having freed themselves, they headed into the direction of Nazran.
The “Ren-TV” employees were especially hard hit: they were all
dressed very lightly and not at all appropriate for the harsh weather
conditions- instead of winter boots they were all in slippers.
 Apart from that, one of them had received harsh beatings, in
consequence of which he lost his memory and continuously asked his
colleagues about their whereabouts and what had happened.

6. Judgement
The ECHR found Russia responsible for illegal
detention, inhuman treatment and illegal taking of
belongings Article 5(violations of the right to liberty
and security of person) ,Article 3(the ban on
inhuman treatment and torture) ,and Article 1-p-1
(right to property). Russia was also found responsible
for there being no proper investigation of the
crimes. As reported, the European Court of Human
Rights also ordered Russia to pay 84,000 euros in
compensation for "illegal freedom deprivation and
torture."
