Making the Grade – Examining the Role of the Board in Improving Student Achie...eBOARDsolutions
Traditional views in education suggest that teachers and administrators play a key role in influencing student achievement, while school boards concern themselves with budgets, policy, and personnel matters—issues with only a peripheral impact on the education process. Join Ed Massey, Board Member from Boone County Schools, KY as he shares successful strategies that help influence the practices and behavior of the board, leading to more effective boardsmanship and higher student achievement.

We will be talking about our event I love IC week and how you all can successfully plan and evaluate a similar week long event focused on philanthropy on your campuses/ at your colleges etc.
-In 2013 a now STAT alumni, Sam Gibble, received the CASE ASAP fellowship requiring her to do 100 hours of service around philanthropy
-after attending the national conference in New Orleans she came up with the idea to do an event around philanthropy education, leading to creation of I Love IC Week
-she began planning in the Fall of 2013 for our first I Love IC Week in February 2014
-Why was it important to create this type of event at IC?
stigma around where our money was going. needed to educate students about importance of alumni, student and family donations and how that money impacts the IC experience
have supportive alumni office for funds and outreach support in order to be able to accomplish this event
-In 2014 we had a 5 day week where we were able to test out daily events and see what worked and didn’t
-first year we had to be very flexible, difficult to spread the word about event because our organization was small and this was a new event
-failure of Wednesday tag day (frozen ground) so we adapted to combine with Friday “What do you love about IC?”
-gave us insights and areas for improvement for 2015
Year long planning:
-book rooms & groups
-organize days & when events will take place
Thinking ahead to surrounding events:
-ex. addition of Giving Day
-ex. taking Friday away to host conference
-ex. philanthropy month/week
Partnerships:
-clubs, faculty and student leaders
-ex. IC Pay it Forward, OSEMA, OSEMA Insta takeover
Our first day of the week was IC Kindness Day. On this day, members of our organization stood in our student center where lots of people would be passing through and passed out compliments such as “You look great today” etc. We also set up a table that described what I Love IC week was and advertised the week’s upcoming events on a three-panel poster. Being the first event, STAT decided to collaborate with another club on campus called “IC Pay It Foward,” which is a club that performs and promotes random acts of kindness. Several members of STAT are also involved with this club, so it was easy to collaborate with them to prepare for our first day of I Love IC Week. IC Pay It Forward made the compliments for us, they were paper fish and had punny compliments to go along with it.
Evalutation:
This day allowed STAT to get their name out there and market upcoming events for the week ahead. Standing in the student center where lots of students passed through got us to expand our reach. The compliments were a really awesome idea to get people to come up and ask us questions about our organization and what the week was about. It was a good conversation starter. Also, who doesn’t love a compliment? Collaborating with another group on campus was also a really great way to get our name out there. Working with other members of the club, they can know us and trust STAT to do a good job. Also other people on campus know of IC Pay It Foward so it was great to collaborate.
Looking back, this event needs a lot of improvement. Since this was our first day, the event should have been more involed and also widespread. The compliments were a great idea but not everyone does walk though the place we were located. We should have done something more campus wide, such as posting little notes with compliments around campus rather than that one location. There should have been something more exciting and attention drawing especially since it was the first day. It’s really important to collaborate with other organizations on campus in order to expand your reach on campus. By doing so, you can get your message more widely spread. It’s a really great way to increase involvement.
-STAT has asked 5 young alumni from each of our schools, who have given back to IC in some way, to come back to the college to speak at a panel discussion. The purpose of this event is to educate students why it is important to give back, even if you’re only a few years out of college.
-All within 5 years of graduating
-What worked?- enthusiasm, we had no problem with participation and enthusiasm from the alumni. They loved being there, had great answers to the questions
-What didnt work? student participation, bad location and time on campus, lack of attendance
-Improved? move and changed location and time.

Celebrate IC was a fun day, dedicated to making sure everyone caught the IC spirit. We were upbeat, excited, and willing to interact with the student body. We had various activities like the Instagram board, Graffiti board, and dry erase board that asked the question, “If you had a million dollars, what would you give to IC?” These were quick and interactive ways to get the student body excited and spirited throughout the day, keyword- quick.
The key to events like this is that you need to have various quick and interactive ways to get people participating. Events like this last the majority of the day when people are going to class, lunch, or somewhere else on campus, most likely in somewhat of a hurry. You want to grab their attention, explain what they need to do, allow them to do it, and offer them some kind of gesture, all in a few minutes. This can be a difficult task, but this is when you use your group members to bounce ideas off of and come up with many choices.
We also had a sign that said who we were (Students Today Alumni Tomorrow) and a video we made on a loop describing what we do. This showed and explained our presence to those who participated throughout the day. It is very important to keep reminding people who you are and what you do, so that they recognize you for the future.
To improve next year, we would want to get a bigger space so that we could be more spread out with our activities and have a stronger presence (front of lobby). I think it will be even more successful if we are more spread out and in a higher traffic area. I also think that implementing more contests could be helpful to get students involved with a goal in mind.
-2015 was third year of this event
-logistics of event
students write thank you cards to donors in exchange for ice cream sundae, celebrity scoopers (prominent individuals on campus and president)
hosted on National Student Engagement and Philanthropy Day, a capella groups performed outside the room where we were holding the event to draw students in
-insta boards -- recurring social media trend
-what worked? paired with alumni relations and giving day booth, ice cream is a huge incentive, paramount proximity to giving day booth, celebrity scoopers
-what didnt worked? bigger sign to advertise ice cream!! lead them to emerson. advertise celebrity scoopers to target student interest
Year long planning:
-book rooms & groups
-organize days & when events will take place
Thinking ahead to surrounding events:
-ex. addition of Giving Day
-ex. taking Friday away to host conference
-ex. philanthropy month/week

Creative Ideas to adapt the events to your campus
Be specific! If you have a mascot, signature food or saying, use it to make your event unique to you. The more custom it is to your school, the stronger the connection will be for students
Implement
Plan in advance so that you have time to work out kinks and secure details, there’s nothing worse than scrambling!
Pictures and videos are a great way to capture the success of an event and broadcast it to your student body so they can see the success as well. Pictures are also helpful in the years to come when you want to reference and see how an event was set up/layed out.
Notes are key so that you can stay organized and have a reference for those in the future, tracking progress is very beneficial
Improve
There will always be mistakes and problems when you host major events, that’s why planning in advance is a helpful bumper
Don’t be discouraged, just take note of what can improve
The best thing to do is to improve and make changes to try to perfect the event for the future. This is our second year holding this events and we still have kinks to work out. The best you can hope for is to have a better and smoother event the following year!
