Abstract Not only is the coronavirus crisis a natural laboratory of stress offering health and social care services a unique historical opportunity to observe its impact on entire populations around the world, but the responses to the crisis by international health authorities, such as the WHO, along with national and local educational institutions and health care and social services, are creating an unprecedented and unpredictable environment for children and youth. This hostile new environment for growth and development is marked by the sudden and unpredictable imposition of confinement and social isolation, cutting off or limiting opportunities for the development of cognitive abilities, peer relationships, and social skills, while exposing vulnerable children and youth to depriving, negligent, or even abusive home environments. For this reason, this crisis has been renamed a syndemic, encompassing two different categories of disease—an infectious disease (SARS-CoV-2) and an array of non-communicable diseases (NCDs). Together, these conditions cluster within specific populations following deeply-embedded patterns of inequality and vulnerability (Horton, 2020). These pre-existing fault lines of inequity, poverty, mental illness, racism, ableism, ageism create stigma and discrimination and amplify the impacts of this syndemic. And children are the most vulnerable population around the world. The impact on children is part of a cascade of consequences affecting societies at large, smaller communities, and the multigenerational family, all of which impinge on children and youth as the lowest common denominator (Di Nicola & Daly, 2020). This exceptional set of circumstances—in response not only to the biomedical and populational health aspects but also in constructing policies for entire societies—is creating an “experimental childhood” for billions of children and youth around the world. With its commitment to the social determinants of health and mental health, notably in light of the monumental Adverse Childhood Events (ACE) studies (Felitti & Anda, 2010), social psychiatry and global mental health in partner with child and family psychiatry and allied professions must now consider their roles for the future of these “experimental children” around the world. The parameters for observing the conditions of this coronavirus-induced syndemic in the family and in society, along with recommendations for social psychiatric interventions, and prospective paediatric, psychological, and social studies will be outlined. Evolution of Mental Health Psychiatric Nursing Practice

Abstract Background: Responding to the IASP Conference theme of “Conflicts, Culture and Social Wellness,” the author proposes Social Psychiatry’s role in promoting belonging and unity (Di Nicola 2013, 2018). Drawing on the history of Social Psychiatry (SP) and Cultural Psychiatry (CP), the author offers a schema of the distinguishing features and identity of each branch of psychiatry (Antić, 2021; Di Nicola, 2019). Issues: Are the histories and current practices of CP and SP mutually compatible and enriching or are they hiving off into separate domains? Proposition: A schema will be presented for differentiating underlying assumptions and core features of these two allied but increasingly differentiated fields of psychiatry. Key domains include: core arguments/dynamics (CP’s critiques of Western psychiatry lead to negation of its claim to universality; SP’s documentation of social determinants of health (SDH/MH) affords the affirmation of SDH/MH across societies and over time); categories (CP addresses race and ethnicity; SP investigates class and social structure); allied fields (CP – medical anthropology; SP – medical sociology, epidemiology & public health); metaphors (CP – “prism”/refracting; horizontal approach, “across cultures”; SP – “creolization”/blending; vertical approach, layers of “social strata”); values (CP - diversity/equity; SP – unity/solidarity); research (CP - ethnographies, CFI; SP - epidemiology, SDH/MH); allied professional movements/outgrowths (CP - Global Mental Health; SP - community psychiatry); allied populist movements (CP – “Black Lives Matter” in the USA; SP – “Gilets jaunes” in France); and, critiques (CP/GMH - eg, China Mills; SP – “southern epistemologies,” the Global South; Di Nicola, 2020). Outcomes: Cumulative results of the two allied traditions, sometimes practiced by the same/overlapping clinical and research teams, are discussed under the rubric “centripetal” (unifying, integrating) versus “centrifugal” (separating, dispersing) impacts. Implications: The disparate methods and results of CP vs. SP reflect the diverse foundational discourses of these increasingly differentiated fields. CP has morphed into a study of Dostoyevski’s “the insulted and the injured” imbued with a liberal, progressive ideology, culminating in identity politics. Meanwhile, social class, the signal critical tool of everything social, from sociology to socialism and SP, is being supplanted by a focus on culture. The author solicits a debate on what this means for the future of CP & SP and whether a synthesis is still possible. As for SP, the author proposes that with its centripetal unifying and integrating practices, SP promotes belonging and unity in mental health care and in social theory ( Di Nicola, 2019). Title: Where Is the Family in Global Mental Health? Presenter: Vincenzo Di Nicola, M.D., Ph.D. Learning Objectives: Audience participants will be able to: (1) Articulate why a central role for families is needed for the effectiveness of clinical and research programs in Global Mental Health (GMH); (2) Describe how health categories that focus solely on individuals can obscure awareness of relational, social, and cultural processes that contribute to health and illness. Abstract: From a family perspective, the Global Mental Health Movement appears as a regressive step to the usual Western health categories that focus on individuals as bearers of larger issues in the family, community, society and culture. These larger envelopes are addressed in the impersonal way of categories—e.g., child abuse, substance abuse, violence, and treatment gaps—rather than from the relational, social and cultural perspectives that define mental health and illness more fully, meaningfully, and realistically. These aspects of GMH may deepen the practitioners’ perception of public health and epidemiology and their international organizations as being removed from clinical concerns and from their meaningful relational contexts. Without such notions as attachment and belonging, ignoring the most significant of human relationships based on the family and community, GMH risks creating another disembodied field divorced from our lived experience as communal and relational beings. After the information revolution produced a global village, the economic revolution with its global flows of goods and services, finance and people, produces globalization of life. While research on social determinants of health means mental health must be understood globally, we talk about mental health in local and static terms, confining mental health to the margins. Health problems are seen as entities rather processes, solutions aimed at individuals instead of communities, and we overvalue biological explanations and undervalue family, social and cultural contexts for mental and relational problems. As the WHO/World Bank conference declared, “it’s time to move mental health from the margins to the mainstream of the global development agenda.” This symposium by the Global Mental Health (GMH) Caucus addresses key developments in the GMH movement, integrating social determinants of health, primary care, school mental health, bio-ethics and cultural psychiatry, and emerging themes in medicine and the humanities on migrants, refugees and borders. Presentations by senior physicians address: (1) global initiatives in primary mental health to deal with health disparities, complexity and co-morbidity; (2) ethical dimensions of cultural sensitivity, ethical sustainability and culture-fair guidelines; (3) a pilot study for school mental health in several school settings in Kenya; and (4) needs of migrants and refugees in the light of changing definitions of borders and belonging. Two international fellows and residents provide the perspectives of psychiatrists-in-training on GMH.

The article discusses the question of the affect the media plays in regards to one's perception of mental illness. The study designed involves the random assignment of individuals to descriptions of a violent accident. Some descriptions were left unaltered while others were manipulated to mention the term and concept of mental illness. Chan and Yanos (2018) state "we also examined the potential moderating impact of cognitive styles and preexisting attitudes and beliefs." 4. I would say this research is descriptive 5. Experimental 6. Results found that participants are likely to associate mental illness with violent outbursts when stated throughout media. I think this was used for applied social research. Chan and Yanos (2018) state "roughly, 43% of the participants in the experimental condition reported the cause of the incident as related to mental illness, in contrast with only 2% of participants in the control condition." When asked to provide a recount of the article 42% of participants mentioned mental illness while none of the participants of the control group did (Chan & Yanos, 2018). 7. In an unscientific method one can simply ask the question of does mental illness make one violent? Asking a question such as this doesn't entail proper research but a simple yes or no question. Research isn't completed to discover why individuals may have these particular beliefs. 8. Do you think or know of research that discovered why individuals may have these beliefs? Kenneth Review 1. It speaks on the idea that people see followers of other groups as being less of an ideal follower, see them as not being an effective follower, and see members of their own group as being “better” overall. This non effective follower is seen as more conformist, blindly following what they are told, and unable to be think for themselves. Conversely, they see their own group as dynamic free thinkers, active, thoug.

Besides the positive changes in the areas of transportation, communication and the use of technology in education and in human health care services, there exist scores of negative impacts that deteriorated the quality of human lives.
