Careers In English Literature
Bill Gray spent more than 30 years at Ogilvy
Group North America, serving as co-chief
executive officer for the last four. Bill Gray
earned a BA in English literature at Harvard
University and a MBA at the Darden School
of Business at the University of Virginia.


A recent college graduate in possession of an English
literature degree has no shortage of career
opportunities, ranging from the obvious—such as an
English professor or high school writing teacher—to the
less conventional. A recent study revealed that more
than 8 percent of 2010 English graduates went on to
land a job in the marketing, advertising, or sales
industries, while nearly 4 percent took professions in the
realm of social work and welfare. As for students who
hope that a degree in English can translate to a career
of writing, there is hope beyond the fantasy of becoming
a New York Times best-selling novelist, a fact that is
sometimes overlooked over the course of four years at a
liberal arts university. Advertising agencies—or any
business with an advertising department, for that matter
—are just one example of an industry always on the
lookout for an individual who can write compelling
content.
