Job Description
Organization: Butler Area School District
Position: Health and Physical Education Teacher
a. About community, age, brief history
a. Butler, PA is a suburb of Pittsburgh that is known mainly for its steel mill factory,
as well as where the Bantam Jeep was created.
b. Boundaries
a. Butler is a rather large School District with graduating classes all averaging above
600-700 students a year. Surrounding school districts that compete for our
students are South Butler School District (Knoch) as well as the closer end of the
Seneca Valley School District.
c. Type of community (urban, rural, small city)
a. Suburb/Small City
d. Demographics information (population, ethnic composition, age and distribution)
a. The area is populated by 81,963 people with 41,278 female/40,689 male. The
area is predominantly Caucasian but has ethnicities of all sorts. There are
approximately 8,000 school age children in the community, leaving about 65,000
young-adult/adults in the population, the rest being toddlers and younger.
e. Reputation/image (How others see the community)
a. The community was once viewed as a prosperous and economic city, but as of the
last 20 years has seen a decrease in economy, as well as a large increase in drug
abuse and has even earned the nickname “The Heroin Highway from Pittsburgh to
Cleveland.”
f. Economy
a. The economy is not what it used to be but for the most part you will see middle to
upper-middle class with a smaller lower status-poverty level citizens.
g. Needs, problems, issues
a. Obviously the drug issue is a major concern and even more shockingly at the high
school I am at. Once a month we will have canine teams come in to search
lockers and vehicles for illegal substances.
The School/District
e. racial and ethnic make-up
Minority enrollment is 5% of the student body (majority Black), which is less than the
state average of 30%.
f. age distribution
36% Sophomores, 33% Juniors, and 31% Seniors
h. educational background
The school has a 17:1 student teacher ratio compared to the state average of 15:1 and has a
graduation rate of 92%
i. income and occupations
The majority of the building is middle class.
j. graduation rate and attendance
a. Graduation rate of 92%
2. How this data will help me in my teaching:
Being in the Health and Physical Education field, the age distribution, income, and
graduation/attendance
rate, will all have to come into play while planning.
3. My Focus as I plan
My main focus in the Health planning will be addressing drug and alcohol abuse, that
will be my biggest unit and will take the most time so I will have to decide what is a necessary
amount of time to allot for the fact that it is a major issue in our district.
4. Areas of potential concern
The area that I am most concerned with in PE is the attendance and age distribution. I
will have sophomores all the way through seniors which could potentially bring about issues.
Also in Health, my greatest fear is teaching a drug/alcohol sensitive group something that they
may not already know about. (Ex: Auto-erotic esphixiation). Because if they don’t have access
to something and want another way to catch a buzz, they may experiment with something I
mention in class that I am actually trying to prevent them from doing.
5. What additional information would be useful in planning instruction?
Some additional information I could use would be students in sports (for injury
purposes), students records with illegal substances so that I know how to go about instructing
them on it, and any and all student health concerns (ex: asthma, diabetic, etc.)

REFLECTIVE QUESTIONS:
1. What is your TOTAL EQ SCORE?
My total EQ score is 53 which categorizesin the “high” area of
the spectrum.
2. Of the five “EQ Component Scales (categories),” which one(s) was/were
identified as having the lowest “average” score? Please note personal
examples/illustrations that “might” indicate that further development in
those EQ ComponentScales (categories) are warranted.
My lowestaveragescorewas in the interpersonalcategorywhere
I scored0.5 lower than any other area. This is not a surprise to
me as I tend to stray from an “outgoing” personality. What I
mean by that is that I rarely will go out of my way to be friendly
or socialtowards people that I do not already know. Those that I
do already know, I tend to have a stern personality in that if I
don’t want to do something or I don’t think it will benefit me to
do something with another person then I will refrain from
partaking in such actions.
3. Please review the fifteen (15) EQ components and identify those that
received the lowest scores. Read the items/statements for those that you
received the lowest scores and respond to the following questions:
1. Emotional Self Awareness
2. Interpersonal Relationship
- In what ways might those EQ components (statements) in which you
received the lowest score(s)impact your ability to lead/influence
others? Please be specific!
First and foremostnot being able to understand and be
aware of one’s emotions can influence your ability to lead
others in that if you do not understand how or why you feel
a certain way, then you won’t be able to relate to someone
else that may feel that way. Secondly, scoring low in
Interpersonal Relationships means that I struggle
establishing mutually satisfying relationships with others.
That is probably the most important thing when trying to
lead or influence others because if you cannotget along or
work with other people then you definitely will be inhibited
when it comes to leading/influencing them.
- In the future, what might be some personal/professional development
strategies that you could implement in order to address/improve those
specific EQ components that received the lowest scores? Please be
specific!
I think a goodpersonaldevelopment strategythat I could
implement to address these specific EQ components would
be to activelytry to come out of my comfort zone when it
comes to meeting new people and establishing relationships
with them. If I make a conscious effortto talk to them and
understand why they think the waythey do, then I will gain
their respectand be able to respectthem myself. I also
think that it would be smart to start considering everyone’s
thoughts and opinions before making a decision. Just
because one may feel like their idea is the correctone,
doesn’t necessarilymean that someone else doesn’thave a
more plausible idea or method and so it should be taken
into considerationas well. BasicallyI should recognize the
fact that people are different and there are more than one
right answerin many different situations.

Dear Dr. Lumley
I am looking to obtain a position as a Physical Education Teacher. I am mainly interested in the
Butler Area School District because it is where I went to school and I already would feel
comfortable with my surroundings. I am also certified in Health Education so that if need be I
am able to teach Health, CPR, and First Aid classes. I have already gained much experience in
teaching through field experienced based curriculums at the University of Findlay.
The emphasis that your Physical Education program has set on personal fitness is a goal that I
can fully contribute to. Although my major is titled Health and Physical Education, I happened
to minor in Coaching. Having this minor provides me with the insight and knowledge that
would be an asset to helping train and develop young athletes. It also means that if your school
were in need of a coach, I would be able to help fulfill that role in any degree as required. I
believe that these degrees would be a great combination to have while teaching at your school.
Sincerely,
Marc Hunka

If I make a conscious effortto talk to them and understand why they think the waythey do, then I will gain their respectand be able to respectthem myself. I also think that it would be smart to start considering everyone’s thoughts and opinions before making a decision. Just because one may feel like their idea is the correctone, doesn’t necessarilymean that someone else doesn’thave a more plausible idea or method and so it should be taken into considerationas well. BasicallyI should recognize the fact that people are different and there are more than one right answerin many different situations. Cover Letter 273 Green Manor Drive Butler, PA, 16002 October 4, 2015 Dr. Dale Lumley Superintendent School Board Butler Area School District 120 Campus Lane Butler, PA 16002 Dear Dr. Lumley I am looking to obtain a position as a Physical Education Teacher. I am mainly interested in the Butler Area School District because it is where I went to school and I already would feel comfortable with my surroundings. I am also certified in Health Education so that if need be I am able to teach Health, CPR, and First Aid classes. I have already gained much experience in teaching through field experienced based curriculums at the University of Findlay. The emphasis that your Physical Education program has set on personal fitness is a goal that I can fully contribute to. Although my major is titled Health and Physical Education, I happened to minor in Coaching. Having this minor provides me with the insight and knowledge that would be an asset to helping train and develop young athletes. It also means that if your school were in need of a coach, I would be able to help fulfill that role in any degree as required. I believe that these degrees would be a great combination to have while teaching at your school. Sincerely, Marc Hunka Enclosure
