Towards the Digital Research EnterprisePhilip Bourne
This document discusses the goals and activities of the Big Data to Knowledge (BD2K) program at the National Institutes of Health (NIH). The BD2K program aims to foster an open digital ecosystem for biomedical research through investing in data science research, establishing appropriate policies and governance, developing necessary infrastructure and tools, and ensuring expertise. It provides funding for centers, workforce development, and other initiatives to support its mission of using data science to accelerate efficient biomedical research. The document outlines BD2K's organization, funding levels over time, and some activities currently outside the program's scope that also support its goals. It emphasizes the importance of cooperation and engagement across efforts to make biomedical data and resources findable, accessible,
This document discusses two approaches for recognizing non-rigid 3D objects using Laplace Beltrami eigensystems. Approach 1 projects point clouds into one dimension, computes moments, and builds a distance matrix to classify objects. Approach 2 directly computes multi-dimensional moments as feature vectors and also builds a distance matrix. Both approaches classify most objects correctly but have some errors, such as splitting the cat class in Approach 1 and splitting the gorilla and seahorse classes in Approach 2.
From Where Have We Come & Where Are We GoingPhilip Bourne
This document discusses the past and future of FORCE11, a community dedicated to improving scholarly communication. It notes that since 2011:
- New communities are defined by interests rather than domains
- Open data, identifiers, and data/software citation have emerged
It also discusses challenges like maintaining a biomedical focus and opportunities like engaging other communities and pursuing public-private partnerships. Specific opportunities mentioned include pursuing community funding, gaining traction for preprints in life sciences, and leveraging touchpoints with funders around issues like reproducibility, data management, and sustainability. The document encourages stakeholders to identify and pursue these opportunities to help shape the research ecosystem.
Veterans Call is a mobile app created by Activistic Inc. that allows users to donate small amounts to veterans' charities through their monthly mobile phone bills. It aims to expand charitable giving by tapping into micro-donations from a large pool of potential donors who have mobile phones but lack credit cards. The app will acquire donors and engage them by communicating how their donations are used. Users can donate $5-10 per month, which is charged to their existing mobile bill and passed on to charities, minus a 15% fee for Activistic. The company has already had success with a similar app in the UK and aims to revolutionize philanthropy through broad participation and increased efficiency.

Visualizing the Structural Variome (VMLS-Eurovis 2013)Jan Aerts
This document discusses visualizing structural variation in genomes. It begins by defining structural variation and copy number variation. It then discusses why structural variation is important, listing examples of traits influenced by copy number differences. The document outlines challenges in visualizing structural variation data from techniques like array CGH and sequencing. It proposes dual approaches - focusing on functional impact and representing rearranged chromosomes based on segment relationships. Future directions discussed include single-cell analysis and cross-omic data integration.

This document examines a proposed alternative solution to mitigate distributed denial of service (DDoS) attacks using crowd-sourced bandwidth. It discusses how DDoS attacks work and their impacts on organizations. The proposal aimed to leverage unused bandwidth from multiple clients to filter out malicious traffic and redirect valid traffic. However, the document concludes the concept is not currently feasible due to security, performance, and reliability issues from placing too much trust in clients and relying on slow public DNS propagation. Existing centralized DDoS mitigation solutions from companies are still recommended.
The selection process involves choosing the best applicant for a job based on how well their qualifications match the job requirements and organizational culture. Key parts of the selection process include reviewing applications, preliminary interviews, tests, employment interviews, reference and background checks, and making a selection decision. The goal is to properly match people with jobs and the organization while avoiding legal issues from discrimination.

This document outlines a lesson plan for a Home Economics - Household Services exploratory course. It includes 4 lessons that cover:
1. Use and maintenance of cleaning tools and safety measures.
2. Identifying hazards and risks, and controlling them according to health and safety procedures.
3. Maintaining a professional image and building credibility with customers by meeting their requirements.
4. Planning workloads to complete tasks and maintaining quality of own performance.
The lessons include learning competencies, activities, assessments, and durations. The overall goal is to teach students about household services occupations and safety.
LUVRules, Inc. is requesting $650,000 in federal grant funding to launch a hospitality management career training and job placement program for disadvantaged individuals in Las Vegas, Nevada. The program will partner with Pioneer Human Services, who has 42 years of experience running integrated social services and job training programs through a network of social enterprise businesses. Trainees will receive on-the-job training in hospitality management positions within the partner organizations to build specific skills for long-term career placement, addressing limitations of general education-focused programs. The goal is to help trainees gain living-wage employment and reduce poverty through this Social Capitalism approach of embedding job training within a hybrid for-profit/non-profit business model.
We will be using a build-up approach for forecasting revenue based upon an analysis of the direct competition’s restaurant activity.
The build-up approach uses a competitive index where the patrons per week at each meal period is divided by the number of seats available.
This competitive index indicates the restaurant’s productivity and popularity by representing the number of patrons served per seat in one week.
