Aleksia Qirjazi Carbon Footprint
The Problem
 Unaware of the things we can do to
improve our climate
 Carbon emissions in our atmosphere have
increased dramatically
 Burning of fossil fuels, coal, oil, and gas
 Causes increase in CO2; warming our
climate & altering our weather with more
droughts and extreme weather patterns
 Sea levels are rising; countries at risk

How We Can Solve This
Problem
 This app will solve the problem of informing
individuals what they are doing wrong and
how we can improve it to reduce emissions
 By reducing our emissions by 50-85% globally
by mid century
 This is possible if we reduce our emissions by
2% each year
 “Reduce what you can, offset what you
can’t”
 Can help by making simple changes to your
daily routines

Aleksia Qirjazi Carbon Footprint
How can we help?
 Keep track of:
 Carbon footprint of your car:
 You could save more than a ton of CO2 per year by:
- Accelerating slowly and smoothly
- Driving the speed limit
 Travel:
 Carpooling once a week saves 20%
 Walk rather than driving
 Home:
 Lighting – Compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFLs) save
more than 2/3rds of the energy of a regular
incandescent. Each bulb can save $40 or more over its
lifetime.

Continued…
 To save water, turn the faucet off when
brushing or shaving. These simple changes
can save many thousands of gallons of water
annually.
 Only 40% of the average American’s carbon
footprint is due to their direct energy use.
Other 60% is indirect; comes from everything
we buy and use. Reduce. Reuse. Recycle.
Manufacturing products produces an
average 4-8 pounds of CO2 for every pound
of manufactured product.

Targeted Users
 Individuals that are eco-friendly
 Any age/gender
 Improve their individual carbon footprint
 Reduce emissions and create awareness
 Individuals that want to improve their
lifestyle, meanwhile helping others that
wish to do the same
5/6/2013
Aleksia Qirjazi Carbon Footprint
Why should we solve this
problem?
 Improve within ourselves
 Make a positive change
 If we don’t improve the way we live, we will
continue to harm our environment until it is
too late
 The choices we make in our homes, our
travel, the food we eat, and what we buy
and throw away all influence our carbon
footprint and can help ensure a stable
climate for future generations.
5/6/2013
Aleksia Qirjazi Carbon Footprint
Relations to this problem
 Would like to
improve my own
carbon footprint
 Relatives that are
eco-friendly
 Want to help others
along the way
 For future
generations

on our climate
Carbon Footprint APP
 Enables you to know your carbon
footprint
 This App helps keep track of your
improvement each day
 Carbon footprint calculator that measures
your impact on our climate
 Estimates how many tons of carbon
dioxide and other greenhouse gases your
choices create

Aleksia Qirjazi Carbon Footprint
The App
 Get started by entering the amount of people in
your household
 Next, select if you want to calculate your own
carbon footprint, or calculate a carbon footprint
for your entire household
 Submit the state you live in/household type
 Answer questions about how you conserve energy
at home, about the way you travel, what your
food and diet consists of, and how much you
recycle
 Finally, get results of your behavior, and how you
can improve
