Captain (N) Timo U. Ståhlhammar
Captain Timo Ståhlhammar was born in Helsinki, Finland in 1959. He
graduated from Espoonlahti High School in 1980 and completed his
military service in Coastal Jaeger School, Finnish Army, in 1981.
Captain Ståhlhammar attended the Finnish Naval Academy in 1982.
After his graduation in 1985, Ståhlhammar was appointed to
Weapons System Officer in The Coastal Fleet in Turku, followed by a
number of assignments on board Helsinki-Class Fast Attack Crafts.
In 1990 Ståhlhammar was assigned as Commanding Officer on the
first Rauma-Class Fast Attack Craft.
During his service as a Junior Officer Ståhlhammar attended a number of military courses that
complemented his assignments later at the Naval Headquarters, first as a Staff Officer in the
Operations Division (1992-1993) followed by an assignment as Chief of Naval Artillery Office in
the Materiel Division (1995-1999). Captain Ståhlhammar graduated from the Finnish Defence
Forces General Staff Officer Course in 1995 and was appointed as a General Staff Officer.
Captain Ståhlhammar´s command and headquarters assignments include Commanding Officer
of Rauma-Class Fast Attack Craft (1990-1992) in Gulf of Finland Naval Command, Commanding
Officer of Minelayer Pohjanmaa (1999-2001) in Gulf of Finland Naval Command, Chief of
Operations Division in Gulf of Finland Naval Command (2001-2002), and Deputy Director of
National Defence Courses in National Defence University (2002-2006).
In 2006 Ståhlhammar was appointed to be the first Finnish Partner National Liaison
Representative (PNLR) to Allied Command Transformation in Norfolk, USA. After completing his
first assignment abroad Ståhlhammar assumed the duties of Chief of Strategic Planning Section
in Defence Command (2008-2010). In 2010 Ståhlhammar was assigned as the 13th
Commander
of Archipelago Sea Naval Command (2010-2012). In 2013 Ståhlhammar returned to Defence
Command appointed as the Defence, Military, Naval and Air Attaché to the United States.
Captain Ståhlhammar is a graduate of the National Defence Course (2002) and Defence Forces
High Command Course (2009). Ståhlhammar´s international professional education includes
International Defence Management Course in NPS, Monterrey, USA 2008. Captain Ståhlhammar
has been awarded several decorations including Commander's Cross of the Order of the Lion of
Finland, First Class Knight of the White Rose of Finland and Medal for Military Merits.
Captain Ståhlhammar is married to Leniita and they have two sons.
