This document discusses a community mapping project in Annapolis County, Nova Scotia led by the Age Advantage Association with support from COGS students. The project aims to create an online heritage trail map involving local community members. Key objectives included instructing community members on ArcGIS software, preparing data, configuring a prototype website, and documenting the process. The final maps showcase pre-confederation and post-confederation properties and promote benefits of community mapping such as improved knowledge and participation.

Prototype Website
7. Project Objectives
ArcGIS Online will be used to share, examine and analyze geographic
data pertaining to Annapolis County.
Objective 1: Consultation with Age Advantage Association
Objective 2: Instruction of ArcGIS Software with Group members
Objective 3: Data Preparation & Organization
Objective 4: Configuration of Protoype Website
Objective 5: Development of documentation for future project goals
8. Objective 1 – Consultation
Consultation with Age Advantage Association
Understanding the needs of the association & their vision for the future
What Is a Shortlist Application?
A type of Story Map that can organize points of interest in a fun & colourful way
Web template each tab defines a point layer & allows navigation of tabs to find
information
Placed on a free web hosting server to share with group members & the public
Original Shortlist Web Application
Vision of having a website
Very early prototype
10. Objective 2 – Instruction of ArcGIS Software
Educate community members
on how to work with data in
ArcGIS Online
Getting comfortable & understand
the ArcGIS platform
Reference documentation &
material
Hands on experience via tutorial
sessions
The members provided the
data:
County of Annapolis records
11. Objective 3 – Data Preparation
Received numerous CSV files
Had to format the data to be compatible with Shortlist
Application
Some fields are required & others are
optional
Required:
Number
Title
Image_URL
Latitude & Longitude
Optional:
Short_Desc
Desc1-Desc5
Website
Address
Telephone
• The CSV files will populate the Pop-Up Window
& dictate the style of the Pop-Up
12. Objective 4 – Configuration
Redefine developed web application prototypes based on feedback
from group consultation
Involved configuration of the following:
Attribute information (i.e. pop-up window)
Web design & layout (colour)
Symbology
13. Attribute Information – Pop-up Window
Early prototypes, the attribute
information had no context
Figure 1
Figure 2
Easy alternative to headings to be
present in the pop-up window
14. Web Design & Layout
Members have the ability to change
the layout of the Shortlist Application
Customize the layout via custom.css file
Location of custom css file
Index.html website
Figure 1 Figure 2
16. Symbology – Custom Symbols
COGS Student Andrew Crowe & community members created
customized symbols to represent the numerous cemeteries, Pre-
Confederation & Post-Confederation Properties within the County
Pre-ConfederationCemeteries Post-Confederation
17. Objective 5 – Documentation
Creation of documentation to help guide the Age Advantage Association
to understand ArcGIS Online
Understand how to implement & use the Shortlist Application
Clear and concise for the members to continue to build their vision of
mapping & sharing information
Platform to provide the steps needed to organize, store, manage and display data in
the Esri virtual world
22. Importance of Community Mapping
Improve Public Involvement
Allow community members the opportunity to design & plan
Enhance knowledge
Empower citizens
Reflect resident's pride of place and identity
Continuous learning
Help individuals advance with technology

project reached & continue to do in its future endavours
Present information on a easily accessible, visually appealing manner to be shared with others
Build accurate knowledge of what community actually looks like presently
and historically in a way that keeps information within the community
Creates a stronger position to represent themselves with NGOs, local and provincial
government as well as build capacity within the community
The platform of community mapping ensures all individuals no matter the

Editor's Notes
Introductions of self & Ed
1 – In this case, Age Adv is a great group who is devoted to learning and expanding heritage
4 – In this case, Age Adv is two main groups who are tackling different areas. Tourism v Heritage.
1 – Age Adv obtained a lot of information from Heritage Soc.
- Non-Prof Org devoted to culture & genealogy of the county
2 - Student projects fall & spring terms
2- Donated Maps. 14 heritage maps from Walter K. Morrison Collection at COGS, have been geo-referenced.
3/4 – Members were at COGS last week and met with Age Adv Assn. Presentation from Savannah

After Mandate – Great collaborative approach that ties in education, preservation, research and advocacy of heritage.
1— Interested in learning ArcGIS Online and take advantage of its functionality
3 – Annapolis Royal group has been actively working with ArcGIS Online
Bridgetown Heritage Group has been using Google Maps.
Main goal is to help the Bridgetown Heritage Society get one step closer to understanding the ArcGIS Online platform.
Using one platform will allow the group to analyze data easier and achieve future project goals.

3 - Assn was exploring the possibility of having a website & using arcGIS to correctly display their data
INTRO PROTOTYPE
1- Get Assn members to feel comfortable with feature layers, Adding/editing points,
2- Big part of project was to create documentation for the group for future reference
Required v Optional fields – BOUND by fields.
--these data fields will populate the attribute information in the details pop up window

In early prototypes the attribute information had no context to them- after group consultation the members insisted that support headings were needed for individuals to understand this data. This can be seen in figure 1
The easy alterative for headings to be in the pop up window was to introduce the group to HTML tags.. This will allow the group to have bold headings without being stressed about configuring the java script that the shortlist application reads. This can be seen in figure 2
- allows members to change colours, font size, add banners to make the application visually appealing.
- allow the user to easily configure the web application without going into the original programming code.
- The location of the custom css file is referenced in the shortlist’s index.html file
ORIG v CONFIG VERSION
Symbology is stored as part of the shortlist application and referenced in the java script & index.html
Esri changes every few months– always learning
--documentation not set in stone—but will as a great guide for them
We are going to be writing as well as editing previous documentation regarding the steps needed to organize, store, manage and display the data in the Esri virtual world
Understand how to implement & use the Shortlist Application
More information
Clear and concise for the members to continue to build their vision of mapping & sharing information
Platform for future students, faculty and community members
Provide the steps needed to organize, store, manage and display data in the Esri virtual world
The group’s initial idea was to have all post and pre confederation properties on one map. However, after numerous discussion, group members
decided on creating multiple maps based on post and pre confederation properties organized by communities.
The Annapolis Royal group was interested in creating a map that highlights the services and amenities within the municipality. A few GEOS students were actively mapping heritage wharves in Annapolis Royal. Now we have the pleasure of introducing Rick Davenport who was working closely with the Annapolis royal members and its associated data
