He was the eldest of the
Otis children. We are told
that Washington, named
after the first President of
the United States, did not
like his name very much.
He is described as ‘fair-
haired’, ‘good-looking’ and
an ‘excellent dancer’.
14. The Twins
They were the youngest of the
family and were usually called
‘The Star and Stripes’,
as they were always getting
swished for their tricks.
Especially, they liked to play
tricks on ghost.
15. Virginia
She is the daughter of Mr. and
Mrs. Otis. Virginia is described
as “a little girl of fifteen, lithe
and lovely as a fawn, and with
a fine freedom in her large blue
eyes.” Virginia accompanied
the Ghost to the angel of death
and request Death to let him
pass on. And the Ghost made
her “see what Life is, and what
Death signifies, and why Love is
stronger than both”.

Sir Simon the Canterville, the ghost, killed his wife
because she ‘was very plain, and knew nothing about
cookery’, and then 9 years
later he disappeared very
mysteriously. His body
was never discovered and
his ghost haunted the
Chase. But thanks to
Virginia he finally
managed to rest in peace.
