• Cancer is a disease in which some of the
body’s cells grow uncontrollably and spread
to other parts of the body.
• A term for diseases in which abnormal cells
divide without control and can invade nearby
tissues. Cancer cells can also spread to other
parts of the body through the blood and
lymph systems.

• World cancer day is observed yearly on February 4
from its establishment in 2000.
• The union for international cancer control escorts the
universal observance of the day.
• The day is observed to create awareness about the
disease of Cancer.

estimated 18.1 million cancer cases around the world
in 2020.
• Incidence of cancer in the India
– The estimated number of incident cases of cancer in
India for the year 2022 was found to be 14,61,427.
In India 1 in 9 people are likely to develop cancer in
his/her lifetime. Lung and Breast cancer were the
leading sites of cancer in male and female.

11. Ways to reduce cancer risk
• Do not smoke or use any form of tobacco.
• Limit alcohol intake.
• Reduce exposure to pollution.
• Avoid too much sun exposure, use sun protection.
• Enjoy a healthy diet.
• Breastfeeding reduces the mother’s cancer risk.
• Vaccinate your child against Hepatitis B and HPV (human
papilloma virus).
• Maintain healthy weight.
