When comparing different communities, open source or otherwise, it's critical to realize the assumptions underlying the comparisons and to compare apples and oranges. One way to do so is to use rates of change, or percentages, but getting them out of noisy data can be tricky.

A familiar content issue is gathering and integrating the knowledge of isolated subject matter experts (SMEs) throughout an organization into a robust content strategy. This presentation will give you some perspectives on how to engage your SMEs in contributing their knowledge as directly as possible in a structured format for ease of integration into a larger, more versatile content strategy. The first part of this presentation will lay out an architecture for a cross-organization, single source content strategy based on DITA (Darwin Information Typing Architecture) for this example. The second part of the presentation considers the use of that architecture for handling information flows during a disaster response. The system must allow people to respond appropriately to the rapid influx of disparate questions at the same time as receiving large quantities of information from multiple data sources of variable reliability. The use of structured content based on DITA can contribute to the effective use of information in a crisis.

As an early stage B2B startup perceived as higher risk by these large organizations, how can you continue making deals and maintain your revenue? Over the past 3 years, CWT flipped an 18,000-person enterprise upside-down, turning a travel company with some apps into a software vendor focused on travel. A brand-new product group brought together technologists across the company and around the globe for the first time. 18 months in, I joined to lead the DevOps transformation, aiming to speed time to value, improve customer experience, and increase collaboration. As part of that effort, needs quickly surfaced around areas like: * accelerating development through open-source adoption, * improving recruitment with open-source contribution, and * incorporating inner-source approaches to increase quality and speed. To make those shifts, we drove adoption of a series of new tools — especially around source code and chat. Additionally, I was able to piggy-back onto existing efforts to define an open-source policy, apply a product-centric mindset, and expand that perspective into a cross-functional open-source program office. This talk will describe our journey toward open at CWT, how we determined priorities and solutions, how we built bridges and overcame hurdles, and ultimately how we skipped entire generations in moving toward a modern view of open source in the enterprise. Anyone working toward an open culture in their company could benefit from this talk.

Modeling languages are generally applied for developing systems and software – both internally, with domain-specific languages, and with standardized languages targeting a general purpose and a wide audience. Way too often these languages are weakly created and defined leading to poor quality: Language definitions tend to contain errors and inconsistencies; notations do not recognize the communication and problem-solving needs of humans; standardization organizations push exchange formats that do not fully work and offer certificates that do not measure mastery of the language. We describe common problems in language development and point them out with examples from known cases. To overcome these problems, we suggest several solutions to improve language development, including using modeling languages specifically designed to define modeling languages, continuous testing and prototyping, and keeping language users in the loop.
