Americans consistently underestimate the calorie content of foods. A study published in the American Journal of Public Health found that participants estimated calories of meals and snacks to be about one-third lower than the actual amounts. Public health experts say this miscalculation may contribute to weight gain and obesity as people eat more than they realize without compensating elsewhere in their diets.
