world network. Today also happens in two other cities of Germany (Mittelhessen & Leipzig), in
Montevideo (Uruguay) since 2009, and in Warsaw (Poland) since 2010. In 2011, globale reaches Bogota
(Colombia) and Rio.
The goals of the globale Rio 2011 festival are:
To approach the general public to audiovisual works that sensitize, inform and denounce
through their language.
To show aspects of reality that are often ignored or distorted by big media corporations.
To create opportunities for exchange reflection and critical debates about the globalization
processes and identify its impacts and its consequences in Brazil and Latin America.
globale Rio aims to reach a very diverse audience. The screenings will be held in different regions and
areas of the city of Rio de Janeiro and around the capital - movie theaters, schools, universities, culture
associations, social centers, etc.
How to apply for globale Rio 2011
Registrations are open from February 17 to April 30, 2011.
The audiovisual material must address at least one of the central themes of the 2011 Rio's edition, wich
are:
A. Territoriality, environment and conflict:
The advance of the exploitation of natural resources produces a series of changes in the forms of
occupation and use of space, what results in destabilization of relatively autonomous ways of
production, wich are responsible for the conservation of biodiversity and environmental
resources. For this there are many responses in each country: indigenous peoples, maroon
communities, small farmers, fishers and gatherers reaffirm and recreate their identities and
territories giving a new direction into the debate around production and consumption models.
In cities, organized groups also discuss and face the negative consequences of environmental
2. degradation through actions of solidarity with affected populations and the search for solutions
that challenge the capitalist model of development, with sustainable alternatives to the
environmental crisis.
B. Poetic terrorism:
"Get in an ATM and spit fire. Install alien capsules in public squares. Kidnap someone and make
them happy." Poetic terrorism are non-violent forms of expression, mobilization and spreading of
art, out of any conventional structure of consumption. The act leads to reflection on the process
of economic integration, cultural, social and political occurring with globalization. With it, artists
can maximize the concept of freedom and lead to paradigm shifts. Poetic terrorism is art and
activism. It is social transformation.
C. Global city:
The expression Global City appeared in 1991, in the work of Dutch sociologist Saskia Sassen. The
concept applies to cities that are a reference to international capital in their regions. The films in
this axis show places that fit this idea or are concerned with the cities that have undergone or
are undergoing major transformations to host great international events - as the host cities of the
World Cup 2010 in South Africa, and Rio de Janeiro. What are the impacts of these processes on
the populations of these places and their surroundings, and who are their principal beneficiaries?
D. Actions against hegemonic media:
Initiatives that question the coverage of the mainstream media, presenting an alternative view of
people's struggles; records of communitary actions wich are popular, alternative and free,
radicals in the struggle for the communication human right.
E. Walls and holes:
The films in this axis deal with the barriers constructed to prevent the flow of people between
countries or regions of conflict of any kind (military, economic, religious, etc.). Since the Great
Wall of China, till the walls of Berlin, Israel / Palestine, US / Mexico, the so-called Walls of Shame
are not only the physical structures. As complexes legal (and illegal) systems for immigration, the
walls also act as invisible barriers. However, there is always someone willing to pierce these
schemes with courage and creativity.
The material should be sent in DVD format. It is desirable that even the films spoken in Portuguese
could have Portuguese subtitles as some exhibitions will be held for groups with special needs. The
foreign language films must be subtitled in Portuguese (preferred) or Spanish or English.
