To reduce prescription painkiller use and overdose deaths on Staten Island, which has the highest rates of opioid use and number of prescription drugs filled in New York City, a collective impact initiative called TYSA was formed, bringing together over 30 cross-sector organizations to align their strategies, resources, and agendas around youth substance abuse prevention using a systems-level approach. TYSA implemented evidence-based strategies like physician training on responsible pain management and addiction screening, public awareness campaigns, and expanding access to high-quality treatment and harm reduction programs like naloxone to address local factors contributing to youth substance abuse, such as accessibility of prescription drugs and community attitudes. Although Staten Island organizations have a long tradition of
working together, efforts were often in silo and competitive.TYSA
provided a vehicle to align strategies, resources, and agendas across
systems to make significant improvements in youth substance abuse
prevention.
Today,TYSA is comprised of over 30 cross-sector organizations, all
coming to the table with the sole purpose of addressing youth
substance abuse in our community.
