Business project
aims to be boost
for city start-upsA NEW programme hopes to improve
business start-up rates in Portsmouth.
Currently the city has low rates in
comparison to Brighton which has nearly
double the number of new businesses.
The programme is being launched by
the Business and Enterprise workstream
of the Shaping Portsmouth programme.
Stef Nienaltowski, chairman of the
group said: ‘Historically, in Portsmouth,
people went to work for someone else.
So our theme is that in the future, Port-
smouth will be the place that you work
for yourself.’
‘If we create more entrepreneurial
opportunities in the city then it will
improve our start-up rates and help to
tackle unemployment in the city.’
The launch event which is taking place
on Saturday, May 9, will give budding
entrepreneurs the chance to get informa-
tion from a series of short presentations
and one-to-one appointments with busi-
ness experts.
There will also be a series of break-out
sessions on 12 different areas for both
start-ups and existing business owners.
These will run all day and include a
range of topics from finance and market-
ing to product development.
The programme works in partnership
with Portsmouth City Council and Port-
smouth University.
Peter Hooley, from the university, is
leading the project.
He said: ‘We’re trying to start a culture
of business start-up, so as well as hosting
this event every year, entrepreneurs will
also be able to access a range of business
start-up resources and event details
through a new website we’re launching.
The launch event is at Richmond
Building on Portland Street from 10am
to 2pm.
Local programme which will offer support to local
entrepreneurs hopes to create more opportunities
