During World War 2 in Bulgaria, Gypsies/Roma were not subject to repressive laws like Jews and were not the target of genocide. They served voluntarily in the Bulgarian army alongside other Bulgarians from 1939-1945. Some Gypsies became non-commissioned officers after training. Though faced with prejudice elsewhere, German soldiers generally treated Bulgarian Gypsy soldiers equally. During the war, over 10,000 Bulgarian soldiers were killed including Gypsies who were posthumously promoted. Gypsies participated in all aspects of Bulgaria's involvement in the war until its end in 1945.
