Expansive soils, also known as swelling soils, shrink and swell dramatically depending on moisture content and can cause significant damage to buildings and infrastructure. These soils are common in many parts of the United States, especially in the midwestern and western regions. When wet, the clay minerals in expansive soils absorb water and expand in volume, and when dry, they release the water and shrink, potentially causing foundations and floors to crack.
