2. Is Your Wet Garbage Harming
the Environment?
Humans produce an average of 2.1 billion tons of wet garbage annually.
This garbage is typically food waste, yard trimmings, paper, and other
organic materials. When wet garbage is sent to landfills, it decomposes
and produces methane, a greenhouse gas that is 28 times more potent
than carbon dioxide. In fact, landfills account for 18% of human-related
methane emissions globally.
Wet garbage can also cause soil and water pollution. Leachate, which is
the liquid that seeps out of decomposing garbage, can contaminate
groundwater and surface water. This can harm aquatic life and make
water unsafe for human consumption.

Nutrient-Rich Castings ЁЯМ▒
Black Soldier Fly larvae produce a high-quality compost that's rich in nutrients,
making it an ideal soil amendment for gardens and farms.
Reduced Landfill Waste ЁЯЪо
By composting with Black Soldier Fly larvae, you can keep food waste out of the
landfill, which helps reduce greenhouse gas emissions and prevents the release of
harmful leachate.
Self-Sustaining System ЁЯФД
Because the larvae feed on food waste, you don't need to add external inputs like
water or fertilizer. The system is self-sustaining and low maintenance, making it an
ideal choice for urban and suburban environments.
4 Larvae and Flies as Protein Supplements and bio dieselЁЯРЫ
Black soldier fly larvae and flies are a sustainable and nutritious alternative to
traditional sources of protein. They can be used as protein supplements for poultry and
humans, and their body fats can be used as biodiesel.

Black Soldier Fly larvae have an insatiable appetite for organic waste. They'll happily chow down on your fruit and veggie scraps,
leftover bread, dairy products, and even meat and bones. Just make sure to avoid highly acidic or sugary foods, which can upset
their delicate digestive systems.

7. Harvesting and Using Black Soldier Fly Castings
1 What are Castings?
Castings are the nutrient-rich
compost produced by Black
Soldier Fly larvae. They provide
valuable nutrients to plants and
can improve soil structure and
water retention.
2 Using Castings
You can use Black Soldier Fly
castings just like other compost -
as a soil amendment, top
dressing, or potting mix
component. They can also be
used in vermicomposting system.
3 Market Potential
There is a growing market for Black
Soldier Fly castings, with many
companies selling the compost as a
high-value soil amendment for
organic agriculture. Because price of
vermicompost is RS. 25/kg where as
BSF manure is just RS 10/kg
9. Larvae and Flies as a Sustainable Protein Supplement
Black Soldier Fly larvae and flies are a sustainable and nutritious alternative to traditional sources of protein, and can be
produced on a small scale with minimal resources. They have a high protein content and are rich in essential amino acids, making
them an ideal choice for poultry feed and human consumption.
Benefits for Poultry ЁЯРУ
тАв High protein content supports growth and development
тАв BSF larvae are an eco-friendly protein source because they can improve feed conversion rates.
тАв Reduce costs and have a lower environmental impact than traditional protein sources like soy for chicken feed.
Benefits for Humans ЁЯМН
тАв Sustainable, affordable and eco-friendly alternative to traditional source of protein.
тАв Poultry birds take nearly two months to reach maturity, while BSF larvae reach maturity in a matter of weeks.
тАв Rich in essential amino acids, which are necessary for muscle and tissue repair
тАв Can be produced on bigger scale as well as small scale with minimal resources, making it an ideal choice for communities with
limited access to protein sources
11. The Sustainable Fuel
Biodiesel is a clean-burning, renewable fuel that can be made from a
variety of sources, including vegetable oil, yellow grease, cooking oil, and
animal fat. The process of making biodiesel is called transesterification,
which converts fats and oils into biodiesel and glycerin.
BSF biodiesel, made from the larvae of the black soldier fly, is a promising
new source of biodiesel. BSF larvae are grown on organic waste, such as
food scraps and manure, so they do not compete with food crops for land
or water. They also have a high feed conversion rate, meaning that they
produce more biodiesel per unit of food waste than other sources. BSF
biodiesel has a number of benefits over traditional petroleum diesel. It is
cleaner burning, so it produces fewer emissions that contribute to air
pollution. It is also renewable, so it does not contribute to the depletion of
fossil fuels. Additionally, BSF biodiesel is biodegradable, so it does not
pollute the environment when it is disposed of.
13. Comparing Environmental Impact of Traditional
Composting to BSFL Composting
Traditional Composting
тАв Takes longer to break down waste (1 month тАУ 1 year), and
require bigger space.
тАв Can produce methane and leachate if not managed
properly
тАв If aeration is not done properly & culture is not sprayed
then it stinks
тАв The price of vermicompost is RS.25/kg and poultry
manure is RS 12/kg
BSFL Composting
тАв Requires less time and maintenance, produces less leachate
тАв Creates zero greenhouse gas emissions overall
тАв Produces higher-quality compost as well as reduces the volume o
waste more efficiently, culture sprayed decomposes the matter
left by BSFL
тАв Affordable protein source as well as renewable bio diesel
тАв The price f BSF manure is RS 10/kg
15. The Incredible Lifecycle of the Black Soldier Fly
1 Egg (5-7 days)
The Black Soldier Fly life cycle begins when adult flies lay eggs
on egg traps above the decomposing organic matter.
2
3 Pupa (4-5 days)
The larvae eventually pupate and transform into adult flies,
which live for only a few days and do not feed on waste.
4
Adult (7-10 days)
The adult flies mate and lay eggs, starting the cycle anew.
Larva (15-18 days)
Once hatched, the larvae begin feeding on the organic matter,
growing rapidly and transforming the waste into nutrient-rich
castings.
17. Seeds of Change: How Vigyan Ashram is Planting
Innovation in Rural India
1 Vigyan Ashram ЁЯМ▒
We are a non-profit organization in India that promotes
technology innovations in rural areas. We use Black
Soldier Fly composting to manage food waste, producing
high-quality compost for our own gardens and local
farms.
2
Local Impact ЁЯМН
The use of Black Soldier Fly composting has had a
tremendous impact on our local community. It has
reduced waste and pollution. The pilot at a
residential area- Darpan society, RajguruNagar,
Maharashtra; has flourished a lot with the support of
the residents. Compost bins were being placed in
the parking area, where everyone can throw the
kitchen garbage and larvae can feed on them and it
is being maintain and replaced after 15 days by
Vigyan ashram.
3 Future Plans ЁЯТб
We plan to expand our use of Black Soldier Fly
composting to other residential areas and rural areas in
India, and to share our knowledge and experience with
other communities around the world. Our goal is to create
a sustainable and equitable food system for everyone.
