Specific Purpose: To inform my audience about the nature, extent, and symptoms of panic
attacks.
Central Idea: Panic attacks are serious medical conditions whose fearful symptoms affect
millions of people.
Introduction
I. Attention: I can't breathe, my arms are tingling, I'm really dizzy, and it feels as if
my heart is about to fly out of my chest. When this happened to me three years ago
at an outdoor concert, I was really frightened. At the time, I had no idea what was
going on.
II. Topic: My doctor told me later that I had experienced a panic attack.
III. Credibility: I have learned a lot about my condition during the past three years, and
I did additional research for this speech from sources such as the National Institute
of Mental Health and the American Psychiatric Association as well as others.
IV. Preview: Today I would like to inform you about the nature of panic attacks, the
people affected most often by them, and the options for treatment.
(Transition: Let's start with the nature of panic attacks.)
I. Panic attacks are a severe medical condition with a number of physical and mental
symptoms.

A. As defined by the National Institute of Mental Health, panic attacks involve
"unexpected and repeated episodes of intense fear accompanied by physical
symptoms."
1. The attacks usually come out of nowhere and strike when least
expected.
2. Their length can vary from a few minutes to several hours.
B. There are a number of symptoms common to most panic attacks.
1. Physical symptoms include a pounding heart, shortness of breath,
lightheadedness, and numbness or tingling sensations in the arms
and legs. (Baskin)
2. Mental symptoms include acute fear, a sense of disaster or
helplessness, and a feeling of being detached from one's own body.
(Transition: Now that you know something about the nature of panic attacks, let's look at
how widespread they are.)
II. Panic attacks affect millions of people.
A. According to the American Psychiatric Association, six million Americans
suffer from panic attacks.
B. Some groups have a higher incidence of panic attacks than do other groups.
1. The National Institute of Mental Health reports that panic attacks
strike women twice as often as men.
2. Half the people who suffer from panic attacks develop symptoms
before the age of 24. (National Institutes of Health)

III. There are two major options for treating panic attacks.
A. One option is medication.
1. Antidepressants are the most frequently prescribed medication for

Research Paper Guidelines
INTRODUCTION
To write the Final Research Paper for this course, you must choose
one writing prompt and develop a position. Your thesis statement
forms the basis of your position and guides your argument to a
logical conclusion. The thesis statement will answer any
question(s) presented in the writing prompt in one to two clear
sentences.
In the body of the paper, you will examine issues that are relevant
to your thesis statement and use research to support your claims
about those issues. Each claim or assertion must be supported by
scholarly research in the form of summaries, paraphrased
information, or direct quotes from published, credible sources.
Each paragraph should address one topic that directly supports
your thesis statement.
Research is an analytical process, so you are expected to discuss multiple viewpoints and to present
research results in an impersonal manner. It is also important to remember that a persuasive essay
does not simply report information or summarize sources; it uses research to develop an
argument and/or prove a point.
At the end of your paper, you will need to provide a conclusion that features a closing argument, a
paper summary, and a rephrased thesis statement.
PROMPTS: ARTS, MEDIA, AND PHILOSOPHY
1. Should organized religious groups be allowed to act as political advocates or should they
focus only on the spiritual needs of people? Is it possible to strike a balance? Research all
sides of this debate and defend a single position in your persuasive essay.
2. The word “hero” is culturally-specific and is often applied to sports figures, celebrities, and
cultural icons. Define how the term is currently and most commonly used in mass media, and
decide if you agree or disagree with who is considered heroic. If you agree with its current
usage, explain to readers why you feel it is appropriately applied. If you disagree, make the
case for the people you would define as heroic and explain your reasoning.
3. In 2012, three of the top-grossing action films featured female heroes: The Hunger Games,
Breaking Dawn, and Brave (IMDB, n.d., “Most Popular Feature Films Released in 2012”). Do
you believe it’s noteworthy that so many recent films have female heroes, or do you believe
that female role models have always been present in American movies? Explain your position
through examples and analysis of these characters. Finally, are these depictions important?

The big five personality theory was developed by McCrae (Westerhoff, 2008). The five factors are extroversion, openness, agreeableness, conscientiousness, and neuroticism (Westerhoff). Based on how high an individual scores in each category, the trait theory can be used to describe personality. For example, a successful salesperson would likely score high in extroversion. Extroversion includes three measures: communicativeness, initiative, and cheerfulness. High openness scores are often seen in artists. Openness includes creativity and novelty. A good example of someone who should have a high agreeableness factor is an elementary school teacher. Agreeableness includes empathy, warmth, and friendliness. Those with high levels of conscientiousness include scientists and accountants. Conscientiousness factors include discipline, trust, and motivation. The final factor is neuroticism. This factor measures emotional stability. Individuals how score high in neuroticism are anxious, inhibited,.
Writing Analytics for Epistemic Features of Student Writing #icls2016 talk
Talk presented at #ICLS2016 presented in Singapore. I discuss levels of description as sites of epistemic cognition focusing on writing and use of textual features to associate rubric scores with epistemic cognition.
My thanks to my collaborators (listed on the paper) particularly Laura Allen, who also generously let me adapt the later slides on NLP studies of writing.
Abstract: Literacy, encompassing the ability to produce written outputs from the reading of multiple sources, is a key learning goal. Selecting information, and evaluating and integrating claims from potentially competing documents is a complex literacy task. Prior research exploring differing behaviours and their association to constructs such as epistemic cognition has used ‘multiple document processing’ (MDP) tasks. Using this model, 270 paired participants, wrote a review of a document. Reports were assessed using a rubric associated with features of complex literacy behaviours. This paper focuses on the conceptual and empirical associations between those rubric-marks and textual features of the reports on a set of natural language processing (NLP) indicators. Findings indicate the potential of NLP indicators for providing feedback regarding the writing of such outputs, demonstrating clear relationships both across rubric facets and between rubric facets and specific NLP indicators.

Central Idea: Panic attacks are serious medical conditions whose fearful symptoms affect

Introduction
I. Attention: I can't breathe, my arms are tingling, I'm really dizzy, and it feels as if
my heart is about to fly out of my chest. When this happened to me three years ago
at an outdoor concert, I was really frightened. At the time, I had no idea what was
going on.
II. Topic: My doctor told me later that I had experienced a panic attack.
III. Credibility: I have learned a lot about my condition during the past three years, and
I did additional research for this speech from sources such as the National Institute
of Mental Health and the American Psychiatric Association as well as others.
IV. Preview: Today I would like to inform you about the nature of panic attacks, the
people affected most often by them, and the options for treatment.

I. Panic attacks are a severe medical condition with a number of physical and mental
symptoms.

suffer from panic attacks.
B. Some groups have a higher incidence of panic attacks than do other groups.
1. The National Institute of Mental Health reports that panic attacks
strike women twice as often as men.
2. Half the people who suffer from panic attacks develop symptoms

Research Paper Guidelines
INTRODUCTION
To write the Final Research Paper for this course, you must choose
one writing prompt and develop a position. Your thesis statement
forms the basis of your position and guides your argument to a
logical conclusion. The thesis statement will answer any
question(s) presented in the writing prompt in one to two clear
sentences.
In the body of the paper, you will examine issues that are relevant
to your thesis statement and use research to support your claims
about those issues. Each claim or assertion must be supported by
scholarly research in the form of summaries, paraphrased
information, or direct quotes from published, credible sources.
Each paragraph should address one topic that directly supports
your thesis statement.
Research is an analytical process, so you are expected to discuss multiple viewpoints and to present
research results in an impersonal manner. It is also important to remember that a persuasive essay
does not simply report information or summarize sources; it uses research to develop an
argument and/or prove a point.
At the end of your paper, you will need to provide a conclusion that features a closing argument, a
paper summary, and a rephrased thesis statement.
PROMPTS: ARTS, MEDIA, AND PHILOSOPHY
1. Should organized religious groups be allowed to act as political advocates or should they
focus only on the spiritual needs of people? Is it possible to strike a balance? Research all
sides of this debate and defend a single position in your persuasive essay.
2. The word “hero” is culturally-specific and is often applied to sports figures, celebrities, and
cultural icons. Define how the term is currently and most commonly used in mass media, and
decide if you agree or disagree with who is considered heroic. If you agree with its current
usage, explain to readers why you feel it is appropriately applied. If you disagree, make the
case for the people you would define as heroic and explain your reasoning.
3. In 2012, three of the top-grossing action films featured female heroes: The Hunger Games,
Breaking Dawn, and Brave (IMDB, n.d., “Most Popular Feature Films Released in 2012”). Do
you believe it’s noteworthy that so many recent films have female heroes, or do you believe
that female role models have always been present in American movies? Explain your position
through examples and analysis of these characters. Finally, are these depictions important?

Based on how high an individual scores in each category, the trait theory can be used to describe personality. For example, a successful salesperson would likely score high in extroversion. Extroversion includes three measures: communicativeness, initiative, and cheerfulness. High openness scores are often seen in artists. Openness includes creativity and novelty. A good example of someone who should have a high agreeableness factor is an elementary school teacher. Agreeableness includes empathy, warmth, and friendliness. Those with high levels of conscientiousness include scientists and accountants. Conscientiousness factors include discipline, trust, and motivation. The final factor is neuroticism. Writing Analytics for Epistemic Features of Student Writing #icls2016 talk
Talk presented at #ICLS2016 presented in Singapore. I discuss levels of description as sites of epistemic cognition focusing on writing and use of textual features to associate rubric scores with epistemic cognition.
My thanks to my collaborators (listed on the paper) particularly Laura Allen, who also generously let me adapt the later slides on NLP studies of writing.
Abstract: Literacy, encompassing the ability to produce written outputs from the reading of multiple sources, is a key learning goal. Selecting information, and evaluating and integrating claims from potentially competing documents is a complex literacy task. Prior research exploring differing behaviours and their association to constructs such as epistemic cognition has used ‘multiple document processing’ (MDP) tasks. Using this model, 270 paired participants, wrote a review of a document. Reports were assessed using a rubric associated with features of complex literacy behaviours. This paper focuses on the conceptual and empirical associations between those rubric-marks and textual features of the reports on a set of natural language processing (NLP) indicators. Findings indicate the potential of NLP indicators for providing feedback regarding the writing of such outputs, demonstrating clear relationships both across rubric facets and between rubric facets and specific NLP indicators.

The REFERENCES page is alphabetized according to the author’s last name. Each reference usually has the
following: author, year of publication, title of book or article (Capitalize only the first word of the title, subtitle,
or proper nouns), and publication data. If the work has a digital object identifier (doi), use it. You must have a
reference for every source used in your paper. In the examples below, the references are single spaced. For your
references, be sure they are double spaced and if the citation is more than one line indent the remaining lines
by ½ an inch. If a periodical does not use volume numbers, include p. or pp. before the page numbers. This is so the
reader will understand that the numbers refer to pages. Also, don’t use a period at the end of a web address.
